The thing is the last reactor was only shut down in 2000, which means that chernobyl was still functional until that date.

The metal "capsules" didn't start jumping as shown in the movies or on social media. They weren't accelerating either, They were rapidly shaking due to thermal energy which overheated them. Reactor No. 4 was *designed* to be operated at 3200 megawatts, But it went beyond 33000 during that experiment. They had turned off safety measures inorder to experiment with it, Leading to it exploding. When it had exploded, It probably went over 90000 Megawatts, Releasing TONS of radiation into the air and making it toxic. Alot of the debris from the metal capsules also was liquified from the amount of radiation (15, 000 Rontgens) and also caused it to mix within the air. This was the reason so many people died. They didn't realise that it was corrupting the air and the water too, Since the air was travelling into the water currents.

It's scary to imagine that Pripyat and Chernobyl used to be ordinary cities, but now they are abandoned and there is a lot of radiation in them.

Not pressing the az-5 button would have maybe just damaged the reactor badly without it exploding, and not such lethal doses of radiation leaking. Or the reactor would have just exploded a bit later.
