This was after he heard it a few times during the week prior. Usually, the best way for Derek to learn is to hear something from start to finish a couple of times without playing it, and then to play it the next day or later. That way, he has it solidly in his mind. Of course this is completely different to the way most of us learn, by playing a bit at a time!

Derek is a musical savant. His incredible gifts developed alongside blindness, autism and severe learning difficulties. He is a wonderfully creative virtuoso pianist who possesses perfect pitch, remembers everything that he hears and can effortlessly switch style and key.
