Los Angeles is famous for its freeways and now it's one step closer to building a major thoroughfare just for wildlife. An overpass estimated to cost $88 million is in its final design phase. It will allow mountain lions and other animals to roam more freely. Officials say it could help them avoid extinction. Carter Evans reports.

Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs. The broadcast has earned a prestigious Peabody Award, a Polk Award, four News & Documentary Emmys, three Daytime Emmys and the 2017 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast. The broadcast was also honored with an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award as part of CBS News division-wide coverage of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. They were putting them to use in Colorado about 2017....Cut down car to wildlife accidents by about 87% in some places. Way to go. Keep up the good work.

This is amazing! People might not know this, but there's a ton of wildlife here in LA. I'm glad we're trying to protect them.

“If LA can do it then nobody else has an excuse”

Sorry, but doesn’t LA have a lot more disposable income than the rest of us?

I think the mountain lions would have preferred a zip-line instead, but I hope you guys get it built.

Can they really not build this for less than $88 million? I mean, wtf. I'm all for it, but I find it hard to believe this cannot be done for $5 million or less. Christ. is it just concrete that makes up the most of the cost?

I’m all for it... but 88 million, government needs to stop these contractors from scamming them. 😂 learn how to shop around like the average American!

Funny how expensive is that bridge is. It is surprising that it cost for only one bridge. Also they better have more bridges/walk way for at least every 100 meters length of highways.

They better strictly enforce no camping.

No doubt mountain lions are not the only ones who need something like this because I'm sure there's other Critters that have gotten killed or maimed trying to cross that crazy highway .
Hopefully this will also cut down on potential accidents when people try to avoid hitting these creatures

Much needed! Humans have pretty much destroyed a lot of other animals ecosystems.

they made it sound like it was supposed to be thousands of feet in length a few years ago and for that price it should be bigger than 200 feet

I’m all for saving but 80 million really??!! What about all the schools that don’t have enough books, or the school that the heater went out in the dead of winter!!!

I understand the concept and why. But have a million questions as far as safety both the animals and people

$88 million for an over engineered crossing.. how about building a smaller suspension bridge at a 10th of the cost...
