The founders of Kyorin, make of Hikari fish foods have been a part of the aquarium industry for over 130 years. Japan's most popular and trusted brand, Kyorin is a privately owned company whose sole focus is aquatic habitat, husbandry and nutrition.

Most popular amongst the Hikari foods for reef tanks are Marine A and Marine S. These foods use similar ingredients with different formulations and sizes. Marine A is a larger pellet for larger fish whereby Marine S is smaller and designed for small to medium-sized fish.

One of the biggest problems with fish foods is that they can easily disintegrate and cloud and pollute the water. The fish are then unable to actually eat the food. Hikari stays in tact which makes it easier for the fish to pick away at it. Less food in the tank means higher quality water which results in healthier fish and corals, less algae and reduced maintenance like cleaning the glass and maybe even water changes.

These foods are made up primarily of sea based creatures and avoids strange components like fruits and terrestrial animals. They provide amongst the highest protein, fat, DHA EPA omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin levels especially for an omnivorous food which also contains healthy amounts of algae. The mix is designed to provide nutrients in ratios the fish can utilize for growth and metabolic function with as little waste as possible. Too much of any one of them will likely just result in additional waste added to the tank.

Do your fish prefer seaweed? Hikari makes a nori-based algae wafer - Seaweed Extreme. Again, these come in small pellets for top and mid-tank fish or larger wafers designed for bottom feeders. These products are 67%seaweed and can be considered a replacement for nori sheets.

Hikari also has a line of freeze-dried brine shrimp and krill. These foods can be a great way for reefers to add natural foods to their reef tank. Both the krill and brine shrimp come amazingly intact. Additionally, the shrimp are gut loaded with vitamins and nutrients to maximize the nutritional quality of the food.

Have you tried any of the Hikari Fish Foods in your reef tank?

I've been in the fish hobby for 6 years, now. I will ONLY feed my fish Hikari foods, and that's for my freshwater AND my saltwater tanks. Love the stuff!

I'll have to try this, I've never fed my fish pellets or dry food, usually frozen food and nori sheets for my yellow tang. I wonder how they'll react if I did give them dried food

Cool, great and very informative video. I'll give Hikari's full line up a try (only was using their seaweed extreme so far).

I like hikari a lot i use almost all their frozen food such as. cyclopezee, rottifers, plankton (saltwater), and blood worms for the fresh water tank. I have to give their dry food a try right now tho i'm happy with the new life spectrum dry food fish love it they eat it all and their colors are more vivid

LRS reef frenzy is good too & it's AMERICAN so you're helping out our own hobby's home economy instead of Asia. It's a small locally owned business that uses nothing but the highest quality ingredients.

I prefer new life spectrum because Hikari uses fish meal in their ingredients unlike new life spectrum which uses whole fish no fish meal

living in japan I see these products everywhere, but have only considered them momentarily before moving on to more "brand name" (at least ones i had heard of) foods.  the inability to read the package has lead me away, but now I'm disappointed with my choice.  Will likely give the hikari s a try and certainly the shrimp.

I like to feed so I will try anything.  Just getting into anemones so that F.D.Krill prep looks neat.  I like to feed gel foods.  They lend themselves to customizing.  so I could grind the Hikari to add to the gel foods.  thanks for the great vid !!

Food looks great, but I wouldn't dare change the diet of my 9 year old clowns, tang, and angel. I have been feeding them home made food with two things that are always included in the mix; Selcon and frozen seafood medley.
