Fit a 33 Inch Spare Tire Under Your Toyota Tacoma - Simple Truck Bed Tire Mount Mod

In this video I walk through a mod that allows you to mount a full size 33 inch spare tire underneath a Toyota Tacoma bed. The size of this 33" Cooper S/T Maxx tire is 255/85/16 but this mod could also work for a 285/75/16 or similar size. The reason I want to carry a full 33 inch tire is to prep for an irreparable trail flat like a huge sidewall puncture. Originally, I wasn't able to fit the full 33" tire under my Tacoma bed because of some metal "ears" that prevented the tire from seating properly. In this video, I show how I dealt with that problem.

For lowering and lifting the spare, you can leave out one of the rod sections. It's plenty long and easier to control with one still in the bag

Man ! I saw a photo of your rig on one of the Tacoma threads ( I'm a 4runner driver ) because I'm currently debating bigger wheels, I literally have the same wheels as you and I freaking love the style of them, so ABSOLUTELY made me change my mind about 285s, I'ma do pizza cutter !

I'm running a 285/70/R17 Method 706 with a Nitto Trail Grappler on a 2023 Tacoma TRD Offroad and this 100% did not work for me. Great suggestions by everyone in the comments, but even with pulling the tire back while raising this sits less than 1/2" from the rear diff, touches the heat shield on the exhaust and hits the leaf spring hanger bracket. Maybe it's because I went with hybrid muds instead of an all terrain. /sigh was worth the try before investing in a swing out tire carrier. Thanks for the video!

I have a rear bumper swing spare tire carrier but it becomes a hassle if you like being able to access the bed quickly and often. I might do this when I absolutely don't want to deal with the swing anymore. I have a 33 spare too.

What I don't like about this situation is that the hot exhaust pipe gets really close to the rubber. I'm afraid it will degrade with time because of high temperatures

Appreciate you making the video. Another way to skin this cat: pull the tire towards the hitch while raising it. No torch, no bending. Been running that setup for quite some time now!

Can you make an update on the 255/85r16’s? Any rub issues with stock suspension and wheels off road? Also how’s the road noise, I’ll be using this as my daily driver on I5. I also live in the WA and considering this size

I’ve got my 33 under the 2nd Gen Tacoma but the muffler hanger hits the tire a bit, and just in case I used heat wrap on the muffler.

I think it’s been a few months since you put on the 33s, any advice or concerns that have come up since running on them for a while? I know you’ve lifted it since, but would you still recommend them on stock shocks?

Have you dropped the spare tire down and checked it for wear marks where the frame contacts the side wall of the tire?
