And don't give me that, "That was Jumpman, NOT Mario!" guff either. The characters creator Miyamoto, and Smash Brothers regard Mario's first game as DK, and the instruction manual for the NES version of DK refer to the "hero" as "Mario." Furthermore, the arcade version of DK Junior refers to him in-game during the intro as "Mario." Also, the boxart for "Donkey Kong Classics, " and the supersized 1994 Gameboy remake clearly shows it's Mario.
Mario and "Jumpman" are the same character, it's just a prototype name.

In fact, Mario was almost going to be called "Mr. Video, " but nobody tries to insist that's a different character too.

I always thought Ness and Ninten could have been cousins or something. Still the same family, so makes sense why he'd know PSI and be linked to Giygas, but the ages still make sense.

Personally i thought it was somewhere around 1997-98 because of Porky being grounded 'for the rest of the decade' and that would be pretty harsh for more than 4 years

I thought Earthbound came out in 1996, I guess I was wrong
