You gotta get the diesel to mountain dew ratio right. Don't just eyeball it people.

I like watching this guy. He informative, simple, straight to the point with calmness explaining things in good simple detail. It's the kind of fellow you'd want talking to the customer.

White smoke can also mean internal coolant leak.

Check lift pump pressure and check for p216 timing code in vp44 you’ll need a snap on scanner or similar to get into the ecm, these 24v are very different then a common rail and low lift pump pressure will destroy the vp44 they need at least 6-7psi @ wot, add a fuel pressure gauge or light and this will never happen again. I took off one of these pumps @ 450, 000 miles and was still working but always had a fuel pressure gauge.

I got the same kind of truck with the 5.9 Cummins. It was doing the same thing. Replace the fuel filters and clean the tank and fuel system. No longer stop at the local service station because of water in the fuel..

White smoke = unburnt fuel. Black smoke = not enough air. General rule.

Failed vp44. Injection timing is out to lunch. Vp44 uses fuel to lubricste and cool the internal timing mechanism and also cool the electronic controller on the pump. Usually it’s the electronic controller that goes bad first from lack of fresh cool fuel and once that happens there’s no more timing control or injection rate control. Stock lift pumps are hardly enough to keep up under stock power as is the relief valve is what saves it. It’s also common for the relief valves to stick causing fuel to back up from no return flow and most know if a liquid can’t move it’ll boil and heat up and loose lubricity,

I defied all odds with my old 01. Put a quadzilla tuner on it with bd 75 hp injectors on stock lift pump and beat the crap out of it for 9 years and vp44 never failed. Just made sure system was always returning fuel which stock valve opens at 7 psi or less which stock pump only made 7 psi. Made spring weaker.

I tuned and did injectors at 210, 000 km, finally put fuel pressure gauge on at 400, 000 and found out I was starving for fuel very quick. Finally put fass 165 on set to 14 psi. Truck started to stutter at idle hot over 17 psi which I found out the timing mechanism uses fuel pressure to control as well so high pressure screws them up.

Finally sold the truck at 642, 000 km still on original vp44 abused to all he’ll still no issues the guy I sold it to has it to this day over 800, 000 km same pump. Doesn’t make sense but seems like the key is to just keep fuel flow through them to take away heat is there best chance of survival.

Love ya I would love to hear just a podcast about trucks. Specifically like my 2023 Z71 Colorado etc.

Check the air filter first then go to fuel
If it’s old might want to check timing

AirDog or a FASS (or a Fleece solution) + a quality fuel additive are mandatory.

Had to have my 120gsllon fuel tanks cleaned out due to contamination buildup of what i was told mold. I was baffled by it but went along with it as long as the truck ran fine afterward.
My initial complaint was that the fuel water separator filter was constantly getting black quick and cluttered.

Whenever I see an older car with a TDI badge in my area, it's always making white smoke and I won't follow that car for any longer than necessary

Don't they smoke white when they suck up engine oil too?

Could fuel filters among the fuel lines help the issue? Like in old school, carb fuel engines?

I was completely wrong. I remember when white smoke from diesel motor.... Meant antifreeze was being burned.

Black smoke = partially unburned fuel. White smoke = completely unburned fuel. Injector is stuck

white smoke means water. blue smoke means fiuel problem. black smoke means oil maby bad turbo. but white smoke means water and maby a bad headgasket

Air in one or two injectors lines.
Bleed it.

Are you guys familiar with the Toyota 2grfe platform? Mine has a lot of valve clatter noise at around 170k miles. Is that normal for these engines?

That engine still has the crappy OEM filter system. Throw it away & get an Air Dog or Fass !!
