This is SUCH a great summary of Chomsky's Syntactic Structures. Not even my university's lecturers can encapsulate his theory as well as you did.

In my California high school, “Generative-Transformational Grammar” was a required Freshman class in my high school, but only for the 1967-68 school year. Across the state teachers, locked into the traditional Latin-based and incorrect model of grammar, protested so vehemently that this new grammar was “impossible to teach” that the California State Board of Education entirely eliminated it from the from the curricula. What a loss!

However, I could empathize with them. “modal—> tense + (M) + (have+part) + (be+ing)” was more than a mouthful. They spat it out.

As a mathematician-to-be I found GTG to be delightfully rigorous, elegant and useful. The teacher, Mr. Hurley, was a Chomsky fan and had mastered the material. My lowest test score was 97%. He took me off the curve and made 80% an “A”.

I use GTG every time I write. I know where, and why, to put the “, ”.
