The Truth About Population Growth

Показать описание
Many people think population growth is out of control.
By 1800, population levels reached one billion. In 1900, it went to two billion and now, in 2017, the world has 7.5 billion people. So, in 2050 we’ll have 25 billion people, right?
No. The world population is stabilising itself.
In the past, due to diseases and a lack of resources, millions of children died before they became adults. In 1963, the average number of children born per woman in the world was five. In 2017, that number has fallen to 2.2.
In the past two decades tap water, wages, more food, better sanitation, better nutrition and hygiene have stabilised child survival in developing countries meaning a cultural shift away from big families. In Vietnam, Brazil, India and Bangladesh two-child families have become the norm. Also, in the slums, women have an average of just two children.
The population is still growing but stabilising so in 2100 we will have a steady 11 billion people. One billion will live in Europe, four billion will live in Africa, one billion will live in the Americas and five billion in Asia.
Yes, 11 billion is a lot of people, but that is the peak. So, we need to work on smart solutions for a sustainable lifestyle for everyone.
