Counter Rotating propeller 📌

Video clip used in this @Voodoo1650

A counter-rotating propeller, also known as a contra-rotating propeller, is a configuration where two propellers are mounted on the same axis but rotated in opposite directions. In this setup, one propeller is placed in front of the other, and they spin in opposite directions.

The primary purpose of counter-rotating propellers is to improve efficiency and performance in certain applications, particularly in aircraft and marine vessels. The counter-rotation of the propellers helps to cancel out the rotational effects of the propeller's torque, resulting in reduced yawing moments and improved stability.

Here are a few key advantages of counter-rotating propellers:

Increased Thrust: With counter-rotating propellers, the airflow between the propellers is accelerated, resulting in increased thrust compared to a single propeller system. This allows for improved performance, especially in situations where high thrust is required.

Enhanced Efficiency: Counter-rotating propellers can provide better efficiency compared to single propellers by optimizing the airflow and reducing energy losses. The interaction between the two propellers creates a more efficient flow pattern, resulting in improved overall propulsion efficiency.

Improved Maneuverability: The cancellation of the propeller torque forces in a counter-rotating system helps to reduce the yawing moments experienced by the aircraft or vessel. This enhances maneuverability and stability, making it easier to control the vehicle, especially at low speeds or during complex maneuvers.

Reduced Vibrations: Counter-rotating propellers can help minimize vibrations and noise generated by propeller operation. The opposing rotation of the propellers can counterbalance each other's vibrations, resulting in smoother operation and a more comfortable experience for passengers or crew members.

Counter-rotating propellers are commonly used in various applications, including military aircraft, helicopters, turboprop engines, and marine propulsion systems. They offer several advantages in terms of performance, efficiency, and stability, making them a preferred choice in certain scenarios.

Technically this is contra-rotating where both propellers are on one engine and utilizing a gearbox, while counter-rotating is 1 propeller on each engine spinning in opposite directions. Nice artwork by the way!!

Neutralizes the gyroscope forces as aircraft climbs particularly on takeoff that's why single prop aircraft turns as climbs. I remember doing the math in Engineering at Uni decades ago.

Такие винты не требуют высоченных оборотов, их вращение может поддерживать даже поршневой двигатель... Главная фишка винта, это шаг-скорость как у вертолёта... Ещё поворотом лопастей на реверс, получают очень хорошее торможение

The best engineering, so simple the boss looks at the design and asks, why did you take so long on this!

The real geniuses in that equation are the propellers engineers, who had to design a hydraulic system to the propellers pitch in that counter rotation.

I've seen Russian aircrafts like the An-22 and Tu-95 with the same propeller on the engines, and I finally found out how they work after watching this.

This one is commonly use for helicopter without the back tail but its rare to see one now

Contra-rotating propellers refers to an installation in which two propellers are attached to the same engine with one mounted immediately behind the other.

Tbh...
I can't believe I never thought of this...

I always thought of putting two propellers in parallel, but moving in opposite directions of each other, in improving aerodynamic...

Siempre me pregunté ¿cómo es la mecánica que logra esto? y aquí está la repuesta... gracias 🫂

The blade closer to the fuselage is usually a four blade and the blade at the front is a three blade so you don't have even number blades crossing each other causing tremendous vibration.
