In fairness, CGI Is a great and hugely powerful effects tool that can improve movies. The problem is that far too many filmmakers today use it excessively and/or improperly.

Quality CGI or CGI that's used sparingly can really enhance the film while not breaking the viewer's suspension of disbelief ( I think the 2005 King Kong was a good example of this). If it's used badly or excessively though, the viewer just realizes they're looking at a bunch of virtual images, so disbelief sets in.

You see, the thing is that both a model and CGI can look amazing or absolutely terrible. They're both just tools to be used and can make the movie better or worse depending on who's using them. Industrial Light & Magic almost single-handedly prove that CGI can make a film look absolutely seamless. Remember, the Garbage Pail Kids were done with practical effects :P They're both just tools.

You can't beat practical effects. You really can't beat practical effects on a shoestring budget. And, it's virtually impossible to beat documentaries or making-of featurettes that document how people made practical effects on shoestring budgets.
