Magnus, when did you realize you were playing chess?

Every chess game starts out as a draw. The point is to play long enough that your opponents makes more errors than you do so you can turn that draw into a win.

"I understood immediately" - that is, just before the first move, since Magnus considers chess a draw.

"I realized it could end up a draw, but he was going to have to earn it."

A lot of people miss the first part of this question "Why were you playing so long in the endgame?" that's what triggered Magnus to answer the way he did

He actually got him to give a pretty good answer.

Asking the strongest chess grandmaster in the world, who's the current world champion since 10 years, when did you realize your game was a draw needs a special kind of obtuseness medal.

That was actually a pretty good question, as it _enticed_ Magnus to give such a gem of answer!

It's a draw as long as both players keep on playing as would be expected, but there is always a chance the expected is not followed.

Magnus is salty here because he thinks the question asker is implying that he should not have kept playing if he knew it was a draw.
There are some chess journalists/commentators who like to debate whether it is unsportsmanlike to play out a dead draw for many moves. I think Magnus is expressing his disagreement with this view. He fights for every winning chance to the end, which is part of the reason he is world number one.

He got the point of the question. He's just Salty about the draw.

Dude, his signature style is to try to induce mistakes from opponents in drawn/drawish endgames via endurance and creativity. That's the main thing he does!

Man really thought they kept playing because they couldn't figure out it was a draw 😂😂

And this is why Magnus is famous for being able to squeeze milk out of stone.

Maybe he meant "at what move it became a clear draw?"
