On Wednesday, January 27, 2021, the French Navy (Marine Nationale) FREMM Frigate Normandie successfully test-fired an Aster 30 long range surface to air missile. Captain Perruchio, Normandie's commanding officer, explains how the firing went.
=====================

This successful firing against a target drone, carried out at battle station, crowns the crew's regular training in the use of their weapons.

The Aster 30 fired by Normandie destroyed the target which was representative of the types of missiles that French Navy ships may face.

Equipping the Normandie since its delivery in 2019, the Aster 30 missile is also embarked on the FREMM Bretagne, air defense frigates (FDA) Forbin and Chevalier Paul and will be on the future FREMM-DA (air defense). The Aster 30 gives FREMMs "local area defense" capability, as explained by the commanding officer.

That an entire video is showing about firing a surface to air missile highlights a significant problem in world navies. Missiles are very expensive. I was a 23 year surface naval officer in the United States Navy and never fired a missile. When we deployed we were loaded with newly manufactured missiles and assumed they would work when needed. However, because missiles are fired so seldom and usually the oldest missile in the inventory, you just never know if the damn things will work or not.

FREMM are great ships and I’m glad the US Navy choose it as a basis for FFGX, although I thought it was worrisome that Fincanteri had to do some significant redesigning and add about 500 tons (iirc) of additional steel in armor in critical areas and compartmentalizations to meet US Navy survivability requirements. It’d be nice if all NATO navies has the same survivability standards for warship classes; corvettes, frigates, destroyers etc. it’d be even better if all NATO navies procured same ship designs, imagine the savings of each country pumping out a standard ship design instead of having to spend billions and waste years in designing ships that essentially are meant to do the same things. I mean if crap ever hit the fan these NATO navies would be fighting in combined task groups so it’d only make sense. Yeah, I know the Europeans are never gonna be spending a trillion dollars on this militaries like the US but all the more reason to make the few ships they do procure absolutely as survivable and affordable as possible.

Same combination with the RSN Formidable class La Fayette frigates. Herakles with Aster 15/30 is the best combo for Anti Air frigates

L', accent français des deux locuteurs est a couper au couteau...mais ils auraient tort de se gêner car les anglo-saxons adorent le accent français ! So cute and charming !

The Aster 15 and 30 are great. Our ships in the UK are going to use the same missiles. Glad to know they work. As long as there more accurate than Rashford were ok ^_^ (He hit the post on penalties vs Italy) France has the greatest military record so if it's good enough for them Europe should be safe. I have a good feeling as they were developing an Aster 30 that could intercept an ICBM. If that works I think everyone would feel a little safer. Hopefully after the world has been working against COVID we will realise we do better working together and we will get our act together and move to a multi planet being? The big question is do we take cat's there? "It's just a cat!" I hear you say... Can we make Vitamin D/C etc without sunlight? No! Can, no problem, I do that and all amino acids... You might see them as a fluffy cute thing but do you see them getting depressed in low light? You see them eating oranges to get vitamin C? Genetically there so far ahead of us we might as well already be dead... They are cute though? Meow Meow! ^_^

Was this an old Aster 30 reaching expiration date or a new Ater 30 Block 1NT?

As someone who's academic background and working background until recently was heavily involved in Australian government naval=defence policies and naval down selection for new surface fleets - I subscribe to Naval News on Youtube and Twitter. Naval News offers in part a distinctly French viewpoint which in the west the media does not really cover. The French produce and design stunning submarines [Suffren Class] and also surface fleet. I can't wait to finally have confirmed the Macron Government has locked in a replacement carrier, CDG's recent deep re fit has cleaned her up comprehensively and imo the nuclear powered CDG is more superior to the giant convention UK QE Class carriers. They have little if any real anti missile defence vs the US carriers and CDG. Both are sitting ducks. CDG's catobar gives her a massive capability. Why the RN went with that design is bizarre.

all is computarised on these ships. They need 2 years school to work . They can do several jobs/workplace to lower the numbers of sailors.

C'est un peu agaçant de voir des français parler ... disons utiliser l'anglais alors que du bon français agrémenté de ST anglais feraient parfaitement l'affaire ! Belle vidéo intéressante, ceci dit.
