We need #masks4all

In S Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, there is no lock-down. Yet covid-19 is being controlled in these countries. How has this happened? One of the key reasons is that mask wearing in public is ubiquitous and socially expected.

Please, watch this video, then do these 3 things: 1) share it; 2) take a selfie of you wearing a home-made mask; 3) spread the message, with hashtag #masks4all.

In Czech Republic we went from: "Look at the idiot wearing a mask!" to "Look at the idiot not wearing a mask!" in 2 days. I can say the czechs are very conservative in terms of changes so I'm surprised by this behavior.

Thanks for the video and sharing the research. I'm 82 yrs old, live in SF Bay area and always wear a mask and gloves whenever I make short trips to the market or pharmacy. I intuitively figured out that a mask in public would protect me from others and simultaneously protect others from me. Happy to know my intuition is supported by the research. Imagine if the U.S. had industry produce enough masks of various types for all Americans and then mandated mask use for everyone in a public space. I think that would brake the back of the current rise of infections and death. Bless everyone who shares this video.

This is a fantastic film - thank you so much. I wear a mask when I go out. I've had comments shouted at me from people in the street or food shops along the lines of "...that won't help..." I will share as much as possible. I hope from the bottom of my heart that we wake up to exploring different approaches. Bev UK

Thank you Jeremy and Rachel for this video and spreading the data behind #masks4all. I’m Czech and since the very beginning of Petr Ludwig’s work I have been supporting him although skeptical about the response from the public but as you said something remarkable has happened, I’ve never seen so much solidarity and kindness in my country. What happened is almost unreal and it fills me with so much gratitude for being born in the Czech Republic.

Now it’s time to spread #masks4all everywhere and see what humanity can do if we work together!

Yet another Czech here. So far, we got 1950~ cases with 9 deaths as at March 26th. The curve is not exponential and it is flattening these days. Yet, I believe the cases were transmitted in family and before the wearing mask law.

By the way, our sibling Slovakia joined us in wearing masks as well! Don't forget about them too :)

This is a great video, and a great resource. Please consider adding a bullet point in the Summaries section of your linked Google Doc, to a few good sites and resources for making home-made masks. You reference this in the video, but we need a few links to useful mask-making instructions. The current links document the science well, and a quick link to curated, practical advice for mask makers would be a valuable addition.

Thank you very much for putting this together. It is the best video I have watched on the reason that everyone needs to wear masks. We need to get this message out. I appreciate your efforts!!!

Well, I'm from Czech Republic. The thing is, we have such incompetent government, that literally everyone has to do his/her part. My wife sews masks for many people around us. She has got that 40-years old sewing machine from the time of deep communism, when there was a lack of everything, including clothes. In the 80's every family in my country had one in their homes. There were sewing patterns in magazines for women and many people wore home-made clothes. So we are used to such a situation.

Cheers from Taiwan. Taiwan's population is 23.5 Millions. As of now, we can make 13 million pieces of surgical/ medical masks daily w/ full capacity. Our government was able to make it reach 10 million pieces in a month, which was less than 2 million pieces daily before Feb.5. Normally it takes more than 6 months to make this happen. Our next goal is to reach 15 million pieces daily.

Been sending this video out to as many people as possible.Would everyone else do the same please? We can make a huge difference if we can get our communities to adopt this easy and very effective measure. Makes social distancing and all other COVID-19 practices more effective

Thank you for sharing all this information. I started making masks for people around me in Cork, Ireland, and I'm going to share your video with the leaders at my job as well as on social media.

Another reason even DIY, non-surgical masks might be effective is that they prevent us from touching the vulnerable areas on our faces (eg. mouth and nose).

To quote the Miner from Chernobyl noticing Legasov and Shcherbina not wearing face masks: If these worked, you'd be wearing them!

Hi @Jeremy It would be great if schools, universities can link creating masks to assigning extra credits to students... Students usually have less access to masks right now but they are the most creative too....a small extra credit might save many student lives. Also to remember that it's a mid of spring semester.... So such measures might help motivate and save lives.
