I got my Self Reliant Diver certification last year and I am so glad I did. I learned the proper way to have a redundant air source inslead of casually assuming I was ok alone. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

I have used a redundant air source since my 1st dive as a cert OW diver. Slinging a 13cu at first, then moved to a 30cu, still slung though. I sling mine diagonally across my chest, balancing the weight between both sides of my body. Since my pony regs are right by my hand, I have put my primary stage 2 on a necklace, so I never have to look for it. 230 dives in the last 14 months, all slinging a pony. I did my SDI Solo cert last summer at around 170 dives.

Very informative video with practical information.

When I dive my pony (primarily solo dives), I remove the octo from the primary tank regulator and put it on the pony regulator. This way I have redundant air supplies but not redundant air hoses.

I recently purchased a 13cf for my pony bottle. After doing a controlled test at 90’ I found that I could do my one minute mid way safety stop but by the time I hit my 15’ safety stop I depleted the tank. Now that was again a controlled slow accent. And Im sure if this was a oh shi! moment I could have made it to the surface. So after that I decided 13cf was not going to provide me with enough of a safety margin. So I upgraded to a 19cf. I’m also mounting this using the Shark mounting system. I’m also using the Mares MV second stage so if I use it or my buddy we won’t have to worry about the regulator being upside down. As I’m a regular at your shop I’d like to chat with you about my setup. Thanks Bob for all your videos and help.
P.S. I also have a 30cf for when I do off shore wreck diving.

so if you cannot the read the pressure of the bottle while it s on your back why have it there on the first place ?

Using a redundant air source for me would be necessary for me to have full sized spg since I am now looking to get a prescription mask 😎

My concern about a redundant air source is flying internationally with it. Pressure tanks cannot generally be transported in checked baggage and a pony bottle is quite bulky and heavy for carry on as well as having to remove the tank valve for inspection. While the SpareAir system does not afford neat the level of redundancy as a pony bottle it is engineered to be easily transported in carryon luggage. For this reason, as an avid underwater photographer/videographer I dive with the SpareAir 3cuft model. Should my dive buddy and I be separated further than recommended die to the nature of my activities, I believe the 3cuft is more than adequate to bridge the gap. While I would prefer a pony setup, the travel challenges make it an unlikely option. BTW I travel with all scuba gear less tanks and weights and about 45 lbs of underwater photography equipment.

How about the Spare Air 6cubic. Would that be better at a depth of let's say 80 feet?
