Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling (or Max Schmeling vs. Joe Louis) refers to two separate fights between the men which are among boxing's most talked-about bouts. Schmeling took the first match in 1936 by a knockout in round 12 but Louis won the second bout in 1938 with a knockout in the first round. The two fights came to embody the broader political and social conflict of the time. As the most significant African American athlete of his age and the most successful black fighter since Jack Johnson, Louis was a focal point for African American pride in the 1930s. Moreover, as a contest between representatives of the United States and Nazi Germany during the 1930s, the fights came to symbolize the struggle between democracy and Nazism. Louis' performance in the bouts made him one of the first true African-American national heroes in the United States.

Never been another boxer like the Brown Bomber.

His record of holding the heavy weight title continuously for damn near 12 years, stands to this day.
He defended that title 25 times!

Sad how he was treated by his countries government.
Especially since he was such a HUGE patriot for America.
The IRS hounded him and kept him poor when all he did was donate, several times, his winning purse for the Army & Navy relief funds for the WW2 war effort.
*sigh*

Truly, arguably, he is the greatest boxer in History and this 2nd fight with Max Schmeling, is the single greatest sport event in History.
HOO-YAH & God Bless the Great Joe Louis...!

The left hook off of the slip to the left off of Schmeling's jab at 1:56 might have been the most important punch in the fight. Absolutely incredible timing, and rocked him to set up the slaughter that followed. Watching it in slow-mo on repeat.

The weight of the free world was on Joe's shoulders that night, along with his own wounded pride from the loss at the first Schmeling fight, the fury of God came down on Schmeling's chin & spine that night, every time I watch that fight I simply shake my head in disbelief at the end of it- & I've watched it over a thousand times, DEVASTATING 👍👍👍

Imagine having the president of the United States calling you saying, hey, you gotta win this for the good guys.... Talk about pressure. I don't think any heavyweight on this night could've beaten Joe Louis.

Schmeling simply looked terrified the entire time.

The Louis/Schmeling fights were Sylvester Stallone's inspiration for Rocky IV and Apollo Creed and Rocky's fights against Ivan Drago. I didn't realize this until I saw an interview with Stallone a couple years ago but it makes so much sense.

This is such a powerful moment in the History of mankind. I have seen many clips where Max Schmeling seeming admires Joe Louis and seemed to enjoy his presence. Did these men know the reach this event would have?! I am so inspired 80+ years later

The fight that turned the world upside down!

wonder what it would look like if people just colorized it to look like a modern fight, rather than a palette to give it a dated/period look

Joe has massive hip rotation on each punches. One of the goats of punching in boxing.

Joe got his wish. He wanted to beat Schmeling in 1 round and he did so.

It looks like Joe Louis has a white long sleeve under armor shirt on with that ridiculous palette added

Really bad call to just hold onto the ropes but I guess he was rocked/legs were gone

What is Schmeling doing @2:35 hanging on to the ropes with one hand while not even defending himself with the other hand? All the while, Louis is pounding away at a guy that is not defending himself? Shouldn't the referee have stopped the fight right away?

Referee was Art Donovan Sr. (father of HOFer Baltimore Colt, Art Jr ). Schmeling's cornermen threw a towel in the ring on one of the knockdowns. Donovan was like, "I'LL decide when to stop the fight!", and threw it back!

I had Schmeling way ahead on points before Joe knocked him out.

Joe Louis is truly the first modern champion. His style isn’t that far off from what we see today. With today’s training techniques, nutrition, and medicine I think he’d still have a place in boxing given his work ethic

The most composed, destructive bout of controlled aggression, in boxing history. Joe threw 40 punches, and only missed once.
The scientific beauty of his combos, has never been equaled. Ali can dance about all he wants... Tyson can throw with intent to kill... but no one has ever had Louis' cold assassin brutality.
Even today, this is painful to watch. Schmeling was a great tough heavyweight, but he may as well been a rabbit in headlights, here.
I doubt there's a heavyweight in history, who could have entered the ring with Joe here, and lasted a couple of rounds.
No if's no but's.... Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.
