○ Werkeinführung
Mahler hat sich in seine Zeit hineingestellt und interpretiert, was los ist. Und so, wie Künstler*innen immer sagen: "Hier stehe ich und kann nicht anders", hat Mahler auch reagiert. In der 6. Sinfonie ist im ersten Satz das monotone Marschieren auffallend. Es steht für das immer Gleiche und damit für das Alte. Es steht auch für Sätze wie: "Es muss immer so weitergehen, weil es immer so war." Mit diesem Rhythmus stellt Mahler so etwas wie ein altes Lebensthema voran, das im Verlauf der Sinfonie dann immer mehr aufbricht. Aus dem "es war immer so" wird im Verlauf der Sinfonie ein "so geht es nicht". Mahler hat dafür Töne gefunden, und die Menschen, die zu seiner Zeit seine Musik gehört haben, haben dies sicher auch so empfunden.

I just wrote to a friend: "Just found a brand newly made live performance of Mahler 6 which is so wonderfully executed by the orchestra. Never seen such a wholly competent performance. I've never hitherto been a great admirer of Tilson Thomas, but he has matured greatly and in this rendition he totally excels. I heard MTT when he was at the LSO in Mahler 5 many years ago. By the time of climax I was very nearly on the edge of my seat. A few days before we had been to another performance of Mahler 5 which was a meandering mess.

MTT understands the large scale of Mahler so well. If only he were resident London again.
