I love the ongoing commentary describing the whole technique. Also with a little humor, “once you start getting proficient at it you’re tempted to smother everything in beads…”. Such a great channel!

Very nicely done, Richard! That is the best close up of the technique to date. Thank you for taking the time.

I was considering writing to you asking for a tutorial on bead making and you beat me to it! Thanks, Richard. Very informative and useful.

Thank you so much ! you tube is good for some things, a private master class with Richard Raffan i've not seen your work for many years not since the days of Vhs which I bought from the Woodsmith many moons ago and the accompanying book Turning Projects with Richard Raffan back in the early 90's you were a very big help with the knowledge you shared on video and in your books which I have from back then still my Dad rest his soul and I found great joy in reading your books and learning different techniques like the back hollowing brilliant! just recently finding your youtube channel i feel has been divine intervention I moved house not long ago and watching you on here gives me the incentive to get back into it as I have not done much turning since my dear old Dad passed away 2011 and when I did I found it upsetting but I know that this is what he would want for me to keep woodturning taking to it like I did being in my 20's whilst he was semi retired at the time, So the plan is to get the lathe set up again Thanks again Richard, from a long time admirer of your work Simon,

You make it look so easy, but I think I will need to watch it another 3or 4 times then practice then watch it again. Absolutely brilliant and I love watching your videos. Thank You.

Glenn Lucas said Richard taught him how to do beads without a beading tool!! It's cool to watch Richard do the beads. Now I'm going to try! Awesome!

Many thanks for the video…. I think it would help me to see a tight shot of the tool tip moving through the wood. It’s a great skill and I need to practice!

Love your channel!

Glenn Lucas did a video on your beading technique and he also mentioned it helps to drop the tool rest below center (probably since cutting AT center is generally best and certainly you have the tool angled up, perhaps at 45 degrees).

Thanks Richard. Its a master class, for me the video its perfect, on a computer screen the beads are very visibles. Each little video like this is a great "trigger" to intend make the skill you show. I appreciate very much. Regards from Barcelona, Spain

When i first tried this technique i had several run-backs (chasing threads over my beads) and it wasn't until i saw a Glenn Lucas video that covered your technique (for which he gave full credit of course) that i learned to not fully close the gouge at the bottom of the bead but to keep it slightly open. Also he described it as a push cut down one side of the bead transitioning to a pull cut over the top of the next which made a lot of sense to me. And there's nothing wrong with covering pieces with beads. :-)

Absolutely spectacular video, Richard! I first learned the Raffan beading technique from Kirk Deheer whilst taking a class at Craft Supplies USA. Of course, he gave the master full credit and I love practicing it. I’m grateful to have a video to review over and over to refine this marvelous technique. Many thanks!

This was a great lesson, I will be using today! I’ve always enjoyed beads up near the rim of a bowl and this technique will make it a lot easier, thanks for putting these videos on

Wow - and I thought I knew all about using a spindle gouge - this has opened up a whole new level of skill to be acquired, thank you

I've never seen anyone make beads with that technique. I will be trying it soon. Thank you, sir.

Thank you!!! I've been turning for several years now, but just cut my first bead on a foot this morning - and realized I had no idea how to go about it. I'm headed back to the lathe to follow your instructions, and have bookmarked this to serve as a reference.
