Keen analysis! I certainly wasn’t yet in high school in 1979, but the video evokes a certain nostalgia that I can relate to.

I wasn’t a great student in high school. I didn’t apply myself much, but I have great memories from back then that I’ll always cherish (until dementia sets in, but I should have a good 40+ years before that happens). I was a solid C student who has his mind on the girls with the D (and DD) cups!

According to Billy Corgan, the real title of this song was "1982" when he was the age the teenagers in the video were depicted as. But "1979" is easier to pronounce, thus it became the title by default.

This basically was the nineties equivalent of Bryan Adam's "Summer of 69" which is a song with the same subject and a similar title. Although as Adams now admits, he actually was too young in 1969 and the actual title for the song was "The best days of my life"
