Whoever says that Ukraine can't retake Crimea is not serious and not to be bothered with. Crimea IS Ukraine.

Trump: Let’s give land for peace.
Zelensky: ok which part of the USA do you want to give them.

A lot of Europeans are totally done with the hegemony of the United States. Most will remain friendly. Meanwhile, Europe will become more independent. I think Ryan McBeth is right and Trump cannot achieve peace if European countries do not agree. This is going to spill over into the EU-US relationship.
Although I am friendly with the Americans, with whom I have worked well for years, I put Europe first and our eastern borders are under threat.
Investment in the military is going up everywhere. Own production is going up. Hopefully we will do a lot more innovation soon. Germany could use that. Europe is a big power block. The only reason we are dependent on the Americans is that we have left everything to you militarily for a very long time. This has to change. By the way, Trump says this himself, so we agree.

If I had to make a suggestion as to what the outcome of all this will be, I would say that we are in deep, deep trouble. My feeling is that Trump does not have a sufficient background in history, philosophy or strategy to even select advisors who do have them.

My God, you provide all the evidence that Trump will cut funding, yet are somehow optimistic that we will still support Ukraine. Emotions and wishful thinking won't change anything...

Many thanks Prof. Gerdes 🙏❤️ Don Jr. has mocked Zelensky saying “ POV: You’re 38days from loosing your allowance” ….I just cannot be optimistic, I don’t think people have studied deeply enough Trumps connections with Russia, Republicans have always baulked at it, cos they wanted him to lead and win for them, so here we are, poor America, what a mess, voted for by people who want what’s coming 😢

The blind optimism. I still remember Trump trying to extort Ukraine with military aid for information. Call me a pessimist, but I don't have high hopes.

I'm no fan of either Haley's or Pompeo's politics but I am a fan of their level of experience and competence. Fearing, and now seeing just how pathetically vengeful Trump is going to be, fills me with even more dread. I wish I could see where the optimism for helping Ukraine is coming from but I just can't. Look at who has Trump's ear, apart from his own family, which have made it very clear that they are no fans of Ukraine. We also have Vance, Musk, and Carlson. All with heavy influence, and each very much with anti-Ukrainian views.

I don't expect any sort of pushback from Johnson in the House, and while I know there are at least still some decent Republicans in the Senate, I doubt they will have any spine to take on Trump. Perhaps it's just that I am still in shock that the American people would visit this disaster on the world but I am just not seeing any positives at the moment!

It's times like this that make you realise that the American people don't just have the power to shape their own country, they have the enormous power to shape the world for better or worse. What a shame for all of us that, that level of power isn't taken more seriously!

Yeah, it was crushing last week but you all have stayed strong and I appreciate that so much. I truly apologise for losing my cool. We are all still fighting. Thankyou.

Thankyou for being strong when I couldn't.

Those Russians living today in occupied part of Ukraine were populated by USSR there, as they populated Baltic countries with Russians, so that they would always keep those countries under control through that Russian minority. They knew what they are doing 100 years ago.

If you want to see the future then just look at his previous term. He failed to achieve any of his promises including the wall, he's lazy and gives up after one try.

I appreciate your calm and matter-of-fact tone, Professor Gerdes. Right now, the discourse feels loud and irritated from both the right and the left, so a measured voice is refreshing. Trying to guess what Donald Trump will do feels almost hopeless—like predicting the outcome of a spin at the roulette table. It just doesn’t work.
