I work with GIS S/S that has been commissioned between 60s-80s. It’s unbelievable how reliable and stable it is. Seimens, hitatchi, mitsubishi. We also have 11kv GIS now which is wild.

yes it is compact. but you still have the transformers. and with a lot of transformers and overhead lines, it can be expensive, because you need 3 terminals or 6 cable terminations for each bay. But with underground cables and only 2 or 3 transformers it can be good.

Was underground in one of such facilities month ago. 220 kV @ 215 MVA, built in 2017. Unusually quiet, only ventilation could be heard. But it was still stinky (I think rats presence)
