Plexiglass/Perspex for DIY Pet Cages? Pros and Cons | Squeak Dreams

Thinking about using plexiglass/perspex/clear acrylic material for your DIY pet cage? This video covers the pros and cons of this material and also includes information about how to fix it together to create a nice finish!

PROS:
1. See-through, so you and your pets can interact more easily!
2. Looks super modern
3. Cage chewers can't get their teeth around it
4. Wipe clean surface

CONS:
1. Static charge!
2. Not as easy to assemble as C&C cages
3. Practice needed to get the finish perfect
4. Expensive - but I think worth it!

I am so glad we did the pet room in plexiglass - it makes everything feel so much more open, spacious and modern - more like a comfy living space for the pets instead of 'cages'. The cost sucked but it's been almost 3 years and everything has held up so lovely! The only thing I wish I had done differently was make the sides of our piggy cage maybe an inch or two higher. Phin loved to chew the plexi to get my attention and it was at perfect nibble height! :P

I have 4mm plexi on my cage & it's super lovely and strong!
Now having had a clear fronted cage, I would never not have one. Watching the piggies play & interact is so enjoyable with it.

Love it! You can get glue made for plexiglass or acrylic in the hardware store where they sell pvc pipe adhesive. It comes in the same little metal jar with a dobber hanging inside the lid. Acrylic can’t be permanently “glued” with a glue. The glue made for it actually is melting it together to form a permanent bond. Aquarium sealer or 100% silicone with no mold inhibitors is nontoxic but also will not be permanent. It’s made for glass. Watch DIY aquarium builds for more info on that.

I had this problem with glue in the past too, but had good results with aquarium sealant! It just takes a really long time to dry and can be a bit of a pain that way, but it doesn't smear so much I found :)

A really good alternative to glue for attaching the sides, if you haven't already heard, is silicone. Works just like glue. Not toxic once dry. Not too expensive to get. Easy to use. SerpaDesigns has a lot of awesome videos about building glass/plexiglass tanks with silicone that make it super easy.

lovely, i want to use plexi glas as a clear gate for my rabbit so when i sleep i can be in the kitchen/hallway and i can sleep more in the living area in my stuido apartment we are moving into. He is used to a singel room right now because i moved out of my own bedroom to get more sleep and a bigger bed haha

I know this is an old video but in they make a clear Plexi glass safe glue that won't fog, it's used mainly on model cars, in America it can be found at any hobby lobby

I love your cage. I will probably do something like this for my girls when I have a room that's empty. I'm finding my girls are nippy they will bite, what can I do to get them to stop do you have any recommendations. I love watching your videos they are very helpful. You could fix the corner gluing ...and corner chewing concern by heat/bending it into a rounded edge. Or you could make corner out of a metal square stock material, and use fasteners like you did on the sides.

my cages never seem clean like yours. 1 minute after placing mine in their cage I have poos and hay everywhere. love your cages as well. newbie owner as of 12/25/15 so thank you for all the education

Yeh I wouldn't have used super glue for this it's to brittle and the fumes that superglue give off fog the Perspex.
You can get proper Perspex solvent glue that will flow in between the join and weld the plastics together.

How high would you recommend making the plexiglass? I am worried that my guinea pig will jump out because I taught her a trick to stand on her back legs. But I am turning a chest of drawers into home for her but this is a concern and as I have been watching you for years now I would like to know your advice. Thank you for the video!!
