Henry Cavill Talks Toxic Fandom

In this short Henry Cavill talks about alleged toxic fandoms and specifically how he disagrees with the idea that fans are toxic just because they don’t like what has been produced by Hollywood.

I really respect Henry Cavill, he’s very similar to Sam Witwer in the way he views fans and talks about them. Always very respectful of the fans and the lore behind what he’s working on.

His time as superman was met with mixed reviews as was his time as the Witcher - but in both franchises he did a fantastic job and gave the character his all.

Synopsis of Star Wars (courtesy of Wikipedia):

The Star Wars franchise depicts the adventures of characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" across multiple fictional eras, in which humans and many species of aliens (often humanoid) co-exist with droids, which may be programmed for personal assistance or battle. Space travel between planets is common due to lightspeed hyperspace technology. The planets range from wealthy, planet-wide cities to deserts scarcely populated by primitive tribes. Virtually any Earth biome, along with many fictional ones, has its counterpart as a Star Wars planet which, in most cases, teem with sentient and non-sentient alien life. The franchise also makes use of other astronomical objects such as asteroid fields and nebulae. Spacecraft range from small starfighters to large capital ships, such as the Star Destroyers, as well as space stations such as the moon-sized Death Stars. Telecommunication includes two-way audio and audiovisual screens, holographic projections, and hyperspace transmission.

The universe of Star Wars is generally similar to the real universe but its laws of physics are less strict allowing for more imaginative stories. One result of that is a mystical power known as the Force which is described in the original film as "an energy field created by all living things ... [that] binds the galaxy together". The field is depicted as a kind of pantheistic god. Through training and meditation, those whom "the Force is strong with" exhibit various superpowers (such as telekinesis, precognition, telepathy, and manipulation of physical energy). It is believed nothing is impossible for the Force. The mentioned powers are wielded by two major knightly orders at conflict with each other: the Jedi, peacekeepers of the Galactic Republic who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment and arbitration, and the Sith, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression. While Jedi Knights can be numerous, the Dark Lords of the Sith (or 'Darths') are intended to be limited to two: a master and their apprentice.

The franchise is set against a backdrop of galactic conflict involving republics and empires, such as the evil Galactic Empire. The Jedi and Sith prefer the use of a weapon called the lightsaber, a blade of plasma that can cut through virtually any surface and deflect energy bolts. The rest of the population, as well as renegades and soldiers, use plasma-powered blaster firearms. In the outer reaches of the galaxy, crime syndicates such as the Hutt cartel are dominant. Bounty hunters are often employed by both gangsters and governments, while illicit activities include smuggling and slavery.

The combination of science fiction and fantasy elements makes Star Wars a very universal franchise, capable of telling stories of various genres.

This interview with Henry Cavill screamed Sam Witwer to me. The way that Henry talks so respectfully about fans is EXACTLY how Sam Witwer talks don’t you think?

This is why Henry is the gold standard for actors. They should show his interviews to actors in PR school

‘This world, this culture of toxic fandom’ 🤮 I wish the media would stop promoting that nonsense

I noticed how the interviewer tried to paint studios as having a pure motive for maligning and changing beloved franchises. Cavill corrected his false assertion with grace and class.

Henry Cavill and Sam Witwer should collab on something, anything. I’m sure it’ll be good.

That sounds like the most reasonable answer any person in Cavill's position has ever said. Certainly better than

He is absolutely correct. While there are definitely some toxic fans, particularly those who go out of their way to berate others over disagreements and especially legit criticism, the majority are just passionate about their favorite IPs.

Fans are like the friends of Geralt.... They really know him (the source material) for who he is and don't want to change him. It's everyone else who doesn't really know him (source material) and only uses him when it's convenient (money grabbing) and or trying to change them(alter the franchise into what you want it to be.) To that point I feel most fans will be happy if you make an honest effort to stick to source material as close as you can.

Are there people who take matters too far? Absolutely! Giving death threats comes from a place of instability.

However, people have become far too quick to use the term “toxic” lately. A true toxic person is someone that is willfully harmful to another individual. Stating a different opinion is NOT going to bring anyone harm. I grew up during the era where we learned “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me.”

What I am about to say next does not intend to bring harm, but If a person believes that their world will somehow be damaged by an opinion, they seriously need to take a step back and reexamine their lives. That is not a healthy way to interact with others. Social skills and coping skills are quickly diminishing in our society. This is unfortunately, because we have access to far more information than ever before. There is easy access to information to help improve coping strategies and social interactions. Sadly, silly pride will stop most from even considering those options.

He’s completely right. Constructive criticism isn’t toxic. The problem is some fans take things way too seriously and start harassing or shitting on people for petty reasons
