An irrigation system is a hydraulic system that moves liquids from a source to a destination hydroponic system using a backup substrate commonly a meter to transmit liquid to the root zone. All irrigation systems use pressure to move water. Pumps, pipes and tubing are usually required and sized, but depending on the type and the size of the system, which are the key aspects to understand irrigation in a basic level.

Let's speak about capacity, uniformity and control capacity. Using an example, drip irrigation systems, we need to understand our irrigation system needs to have enough capacity to meet the needs of water movement and nutrient delivery.

What effect does irrigation have on plant growth? To maintain appropriate soil moisture in the crop root zone for healthy plant growth and optimum production, proper irrigation management is essential. Over-irrigation wastes water, increases energy use for pumping, promotes nitrogen and other micronutrient leaching, and wastes time.

Is irrigated water beneficial to plants? Irrigation water adds salt to the soil, which stays there until it's washed away by drainage water or the harvested crop. When the amount of salt given to the soil exceeds the amount withdrawn, the salt concentration in the soil rises to the point where it is potentially detrimental to plants.

Why is good irrigation water quality so important for agricultural growth? The use of groundwater for agriculture in hot dry countries with little rainfall causes groundwater salinity to rise, limiting the types of crops that may be grown. As a result, determining the irrigation water quality is critical.
