BLUE JEAN
Directed by Georgia Oakley | 2022 | UK | 97 minutes | Unclassified 15+

Anti-gay laws in Thatcher-era ’80s England see a closeted lesbian (a captivating Rosy McEwen) walk the tightrope between her teaching job and her love life in this BAFTA-nominated drama.

Jean (McEwen) is content in her double-life routine: teaching PE by day and visiting her secret girlfriend, Viv (BAFTA winner Kerrie Hayes), by night. Now that the notorious Section 28 has passed, prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality in schools, the already reticent Jean retreats further into secrecy. But when a pupil, 15-year-old Lois, who is being bullied herself for being gay, spots her at a lesbian bar, Jean has to decide if getting involved is worth putting her job on the line and risk being outed herself. Elegantly shot on 16mm, writer-director Georgia Oakley has made an incisive debut with a story that remains utterly potent today. Premiered in Venice Critics’ Week; winner British Independent Film Awards.
