Why Creature Commandos WORKS and What If SUCKS

Creature Commandos and What If Season 3 have a lot in common. Both are fully canon animated series for the new DCU and the MCU, both feature secondary characters, and both seemed completely unnecessary at first. But Creature Commandos got great reviews, fans loved it, and they even confirmed a second season because people want more of these characters... while What If ended up being a total disappointment and a waste of time. But why? In this video, we explain why Creature Commandos works and What If doesn’t.

The bride is a great female protagonist because she isn’t treated like she’s perfect, if anything, the show is telling us why you wouldn’t want to be her, she’s a psychopath, a murderer, and generally not someone you wanna meet

Not to mention that she has clear flaws and weaknesses, and she loses fights, but that’s what makes characters interesting and not Mary Sue’s

Im just glad Creature Commando didn't add Harley Quinn.

both shows had female leads but the difference was what ifs female leads felt like forced characters whereas creature commandos had every character shine be it male or female.

What If's Season 1 was perfect, but it became the Peggy Carter show afterwards.

The difference is that they hired mostly bad writers, meanwhile James Gunn, and his team know how to cook(Guardians, and the suicide squad for example)

The bride is a perfect example of how to write a badass and likeable female character.

Creatures Commandos has the best character writing, their tragic backstory, and their characteristics. And that they weren't born as monsters, they were made to become one. Plus Dr. Phosphorus is my Fav character in the show

Oh the 3rd reason is so true.
I am one of the rare person who watched the entire 3rd season
While watching What If, 20 minutes felt so long and boring. But in Creature Commandos, I never had any idea how quickly the time went by.

I have to agree with you on this, the What If series never lived up to its potential at all. All I ever wanted from that series was, "What if the Fantastic Four & X-Men Were In Infinity War?" or, "What If The Other 50% Got Snapped?" like, some of the most basic questions that fans had. Instead, we basically got the Captain Carter show. With the news that Hayley Atwell is coming back in Avengers Doomsday, I wouldn't be surprised if she's playing a variant of Captain Carter that's extremely similar to the one from What If.

In creature commando, just 5 min of backstory and their interaction in the current time was enough to know the characters.

The worst part of What If season 3 is that its downfall was predictable, cuz they did the one thing fans did NOT want to happen, more Peggy Carter. Look at any review of What If season 2 (and season 1 to a certain degree) and the general consensus was "less episode follow ups, more single stories" so season 3's mistakes were 100% avoidable

Your way of breakdown the shows and films way better than lots of other channels. Keep up the good work.

To be honest DC is getting very good at making shows with unknown characters, so much freedom to have

Also, Creature Commandos has an awesome playlist.

The whole appeal of "What If...?" is exploring ideas and concepts that hinge on a single event or decision decision. The team rarely incorporated this — if ever. What a massive failure.

One thing I noticed because it was so much on the face, The makers of What If F**KING HATE Why?

What if season 3 is more wasted potential vs Creature Commandos is some more James Gunn with slightly different ingredients and we know what would be superior.

Easy

One focuses heavily on one character that no one cares about

The other one fleshes out everybody and makes us like them

The animation style in What If...? feels geared towards a younger audience, looks kid-friendly, whereas Creature Commandos has a distinctly mature aesthetic. Creature Commandos really impressed me, the story kept me guessing and unpredictable and all the characters and their story are amazing, can't wait for season 2—DC's animation output has been consistently excellent.
