Mazda CX-30 review 2020: An SUV for when a CX-3 is too small and a CX-5 is too big!

When the Mazda CX-3 is too small and the Mazda CX-5 is too big, there's a car that perfectly squeezes in between them. It's the 2020 Mazda CX-30 and this is a review of the Mazda CX-30 G20 Evolve, which sits one up from the entry level. Is it premium enough to justify the price stretch above the Mazda CX-3? Paul Maric finds out.

I always thought the same thing about the new chrome fronts. However a neighbour hit my CX-8 and when it was getting repaired the panel beater said it made lift easy because only one side needed to be replaced.
That said, the soul red crystal is one of the most expensive paints to respray. The colour was originally only designed for car shows and was hand applied in a very specific pattern. But everyone would see the colour at car shows and demand it. In order to actually ship the colour, the factory first of all asked the Mazda Takumis in the paint department to be motion captured applying the paint. The painting system needed to be upgraded with new control software, which could replicate the exact motions of the human painters. This process was called Takuminuri (obviously the painting process done by a human Takumi).
It's the only colour at Mazda done this way. It's also the reason there are so many panel beater videos outlining the best way to actually paint soul red crystal in damaged Mazda cars.
But Kudos for Mazda for always thinking outside the square.

Am glad they retained physical buttons and switches. Some touches screens in morden cars are just needlessly complex and distract the driver when operating while driving.

My parents have the CX-30 Evolve. And they absolutely love it !! Premium feel and plush drive ... So much better than anything in its class for the money.

I’ve had my cx30 astina soul red awd for about 3 months now, married with 1 toddler . This car is the perfect size for me and no problems so far . Only complaint is sunglasses holder is tiny and l can’t even get my glasses in there lol I use it to store other things. Overall I’m very impressed with build quality and performance, as far as visibility out the back goes I removed the headrests as they aren’t used anyway. I’m averaging 5.5 litres per 100 klms on highway and about 8 litres for city driving. I didn’t want cylinder deactivation but had no choice as I wanted the 2.5 engine, so far the cylinder deactivation is problem free and the change from 4 cylinders to 2 and back again is unnoticeable. I don’t mind the black cladding as when I go surfing I sometimes go down some shit tracks and if I’m going to scratch something I would rather it’s the cladding and not paintwork so this car is pretty much perfect for me but definitely won’t suit everyone

I find that cavity between the panels quite disturbing. Glad you pointed that out because I haven't come across any other CX-30 review that mentions it. Great video, Paul.

I own the Astina 2.5FWD. A lot of effort has gone into refining this car, so quiet inside insulated from road noise. These things are appreciated in the long term as daily drive.

I’ve had my CX-30 for about a month now and it’s just the perfect car for me! I had the same thoughts about the cloth seats so I went up to the touring model with leather seats and, can I just say, it’s worth the extra money. I feel like I’m driving a car that’s $10K more than I paid for it. Definitely the best of the CX range!
Ps- it’s also really random that you filmed the interior shots about 2 streets from where I live 😂😂 walking up that hill everyday was a nightmare

mazda make me think all the other brands made low-end cars ugly on purpose. You can look at the cheapest mazda and stills feel premium, both interiors and exteriors.

Hi Paul,

Last week my wife and I picked up a brand new CX30 Astina model and we are very pleased with it. It has the 2.5 litre motor and that many safer features on it that are too many to list. Having watched your video I agree with generally all of what you said. It is a really easy car to drive but with the Astina model, at just under $50K, it is worth every cent. There are two points worth mentioning though. Firstly there is very limited leg room in the rear and secondly the rear window is way to small and does create a blind spot because of the head rests. But overall, being retired, it is a perfect vehicle for my wife and I to travel around in. If you can afford it, I would suggest to buyers to try and purchase one of the higher models such as the Touring or Astina models.

Great review and a super clear presentation. I'm glad to see you pick up on some of those odd panel joins that other reviewers seem to miss or ignore. I know I wouldn't pick that up in the dealer but it would annoy the hll out of me when I'm washing it.
