【ABOUT ME】
Hi, I'm Layla from Japan! I'm so happy to be a part of your Japanese learning journey!!
I love sharing my language and culture with people from all over the world. I also love watching people study new languages. I learnt to speak English using Podcast and YouTube videos on my own. So now I really want to help Japanese learners to speak Japanese with my videos!!
いつもありがとう!これからよろしくね!

Katakana can also save you from your Japanese teacher when they gave you a difficult Kanji Homework

Ah that makes sense. I’ve actually memorized some of those words in their kanji form but was wondering why I constantly see it not written like that when I try reading some books.

I sometimes see katakana written directly above kanji. Is that so people, who don’t understand the kanji, or how it should be pronounced, have a reference on how to say these characters?

Writing in Japanese would easy if they figured out what writing system they want to use

While Shika (鹿) indeed is not a foreign word, technically Suteki (素敵) and Kirei (綺麗) are foreign words originally - both from Chinese.

Animals, fruits and some other things can be written in katakana, so it is not necessarily only related to the degree of difficulty regarding the kanji.

Examples of easy-ish kanji that are sometimes written with katakana:
Strawberry - Ichigo (苺)
Watermelon - Suika (西瓜)
Apricot - Anzu (杏)

And of course for animals, even better example like with Shika:
Dog - Inu (犬)
Rabbit - Usagi (兎)
Cow - Ushi (牛)
Sheep - Hitsuji (羊)

That said, it is probably also the case that some are re-written for the sake of simplifying writing/reading, but in many cases it isn't. The Chinese reading (aka. onyomi) of Kanji is often written in dictionaries with katakana as well, exactly because it once was a loan/foreign word.
