Yidams are not necessarily the same as protectors (Dharmapalas). Examples of yidams are Kalachakra, Yamantaka, Heruka, Vajrayogini, Guhyasamaja, Tara Chintamani, etc. The protectors (Dharmapalas) are the deities that protect the practitioners and the teachings. Examples of protectors are Mahakala, Vajravega, Palden Lhamo, Maha Rakta Ganapati, Rahula, etc.And these are NOT "creatures".

Many great practitioners or incarnation holy Lama see and communicate with the Yidam Deities in their pure how some holy prayers were written down as well. In the Nyingma lineage, there is Terma Teaching, related to Guru Rinpoche. Some holy Rinpoche were destined to reveal the mind Terma.
