Tegan and Sara have meant so much to the LGBT + community through their music, interaction, fashion and of course through their foundation. To name just a few.
You have to be the lowest of the low character to catfish fans, to put that kind of stress on Tegan and Sara and forever change their lives. I hope you are able to catch them and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law!!!
❤ sending so much love to all those affected!!

I feel so sorry for Tegan and Sara. They didn’t deserved to be catfished along with their friend. I hope whoever created that fake website gets put behind bars for good. We love you Tegan and Sara!💖

I'm also a twin. I've also had my identity stolen multiple times. Recently found out a stalker of over 10 years (weirdly I was with them in a group of friends the day I met Tegan and Sara at an SF pride...) had also taken over multiple of my best friends profiles including her moms and grandma's and proceeded to send them horrible pictures etc.. as well as pretend to be them on other apps. I had a feeling this was happening to me too and then the stalker finally admitted it, almost proud. There are no protection in the state my friend lives in and that is why I think they started to target her as well. This is so much more a common issue than people realize. It is disgusting and no one deserves to have their identity stolen, and to also be told "why does it even matter, it doesnt actually affect you" is the cherry of doom on top of the mountain of audacity these abusers reside upon.
I'm so sorry this happened to you, and am eternally proud of you sticking up for yourself. ❤

I remember Tegan mentioned once someone posed as her on Facebook but I had no idea this ran this deep.

I've had someone (or multiple people) doing this to me for over 3 years after I built a Supernatural fan group. The cyber stalking is still going on daily and it's a ft nightmare. I can't wait to see this. I'm sorry you went through this too, it's absolute hell on earth and I can't really do much about it but I'm glad (hopefully you got it sorted out and are healing from it. It's terrifying. Sending you love. Thank you for sharing your story. ❤

Can't help but feel compassion towards both of you, being a fan for years and enjoying your music and art somehow makes me feel very protective of you. Thank you for sharing such a painful and violent experience with us, I can only hope you guys have a peaceful happy life, you deserve it ❤

This is devastating that this happened but I'm glad they're able to be speaking up about this now. Like how Chappell Roan has quickly become vocal about boundaries with fans in parasocial relationships with her, this speaks to hopefully an evolution of healthier boundaries in fandom communities and culture especially in these cases intersecting with queer women in music.

I remember hearing rumors in the community in the early 2010s about how someone had been using a fake local hometown phone number to contact fans as Tegan but didn't know the depth of how far this had spiralled.
This must've been the documentary that fans like myself had submitted fan media and memorabilia to a few years ago. It seemed like the documentary was pitched as just an overview of Tegan and Sara's career and fan community and then the narrative became about the impact of this catfishing. A truly toxic extreme flip side of a community/fandom based on artists that have influenced such positive impacts on so many people, myself included.

My heart goes out to you, Tegan. 💕 I’m highly empathetic and have studied trauma informed practice, and I have been through a lot myself. I can’t even imagine how traumatizing this must have been and likely still is. I had no clue this was going on and I’ve been a fan ever since you went public from the contest you won! I’m so proud of you for making this experience public and to Sara for agreeing to it, otherwise I’m sure this wouldn’t have been made. Lots of love!! From Montreal 😎💜

Here's you two singing about how everything is awesome and working your butts off, doing real life stuff and quietly dealing with this misogyny. My heart hurts for you both, all of their victims. Ty for opening up about it, hopefully it'll help others as well. ❤

i wonder if this is why i met Sara several times on the 2007/2008 The Con tour for autographs, photos and brief chitchat but Tegan was never around. this makes me sick to my stomach, i hope the police found the person and put them behind bars.

Finally watched the doc yesterday. Very well done. Although you’re both wrong, “Tara” was definitely a Fegan (probably the original).

I've been a long time fan, I was contacted by this fake Tegan but I can say that there were multiple people impersonating them. I don't know if they will talk about it in the doc.
I just wanna say something: the fandom culture is very toxic sometimes. We need to talk about it. And I'm embarrassed because in this fandom sometimes I acted in inappropriate ways, always trying to know more about their personal life, reading for hours the L chat forum, such a toxic place. And on Twitter some things were really off sometimes, always treating them more as idols than human beings. All the dramas. Always trying to know more. I know I was very young and many fans were really young... We need more education, we need to talk about this stuff.
That's the reason why I probably drifted away from the fandom culture when I grew up.

Ps: obviously it wasn't always like this, I've known some wonderful people through this fandom.
