Dr Happymon Jacob speaks with Mr Kanak Mani Dixit (Publisher of Himal Khabarpatrika & editor of Himal Southasian) and Amb. Rakesh Sood (Retd.) (Former Ambassador to Nepal), about the recent tensions in India-
Nepal relations. The two guests discuss the triggers of these tensions and trace the primary cause to multiple maps released by the British government in India. The conversation presents views from both India and Nepal as to how the
differing perceptions presented by these maps should be interpreted in the present time. The conversation also discusses the impact of Nepalese domestic politics, China’s growing closeness to Nepal and India’s 2015 blockade on India-Nepal relations. Towards the end, the two guests recommend steps that need to be taken by both governments to
restore relations and restart border resolution mechanisms.

Fantastic discussion - who wins is not the question rather it lets us know how a journalistic session should happen and sets an excellent example on international relation how learned people speak to arrive at a solution rather than putting the foot down and close any avenues - kudos to the honest journalism.
succeeds like a peaceful approach and an honest wish to negotiate.

Its surprising to know a true journalism exists in India! Both sides put their views clearly and peacefully. Salute to both Mr Dixit and Mr Sood. Indian medias (those shout worthlessly) should listen to this. Its time to sit down on the table and let the expertise decide.

I enjoyed the whole debate, very intellectual and no any harsh words. I would like to see such debates again and see the problems between the two nations resolved through dialogues.

It's really sad that the nations that have shared cultural and historical relations for ages are at loggerheads due to the hyper-nationalistic governments on either side.
I wish we have a peaceful dialogue through Track I and Track II diplomacy and don't emotionally react to these sensitive issues.

Why india can't afford nepal to go away?
1) strategic location between india and china with open borders, most of northern himalayas falls in nepal additionally, indian chiken neck17 miles abroad only connect whole north india, imagine nepal let china to sit on that neck. it will be piece of cake to disconnect whole north india.
2) open border with same culture, with 10 millions nepalis in india and shared culture nepal can easily spy, create huge problem to india.
3) most of rivers flow to india comes from nepal, it can hold and flood indian northern part any time.
4) 40 thousands gurkha infantry will come back nepal again further effecting indian army.
5) loosing vote in UN, remember indian, big country india and small nepal they can have only 1 vote ok.
6) nepal is 7th largest remittance country for india search google( iKnow indian media never metion it)
7) loosing best ally nepal in asia doesnot make look india better in the world. though nepal is small, but remember britain have gurkha soldiers, singapore and brunei have gorkha soldier too. so friendly countrries of nepal will have some negative impact with india in diplomatic ways
many many more...
NOW godi media start showing why nepal is important to india and wakig up its people rather than keep insulting.
