Love the idea of a tri-fold. You could actually have normal aspect ratios on both the cover and the large screen instead of a square. Plus you would have a true tablet screen in your pocket. Now that folding phones are getting so thin I think it's feasable

It´s pointless to give opinion about a device that has not even come out yet... and with regards to the question "in what scenario does a 10" device that fits in your pocket is usefull". I can think of many scenarios. If you are on a train or on a plane it would be fantastic for netflix or any media consumption. A normal foldable is not really much better at all than a normal phone for viewing videos becuase of the aspect ratio, a 10 " device would be much better. Another fantastic scenario would be in using desktop mode in replacement of a laptop. Most people use their laptops only for email and office, and this device, coupled with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, would easily replace a laptop. The only disadvantages that need to be overcome are price and thickness of the device. I would never be able to afford this first genaration, but if in a couple of years the price goes down considerably I would definitely buy one.

As a IT guy, I've been waiting for a real phone that turns to a full size tablet for a while. Hope any company, being Huawei or another will start this new segment of market soon. I'm definitely in.

To be honest, I would't mind a trifold. I think its a great concept if it could replace the tablet, this way you'd only need to truly carry around a phone and save so much space and weight.
I also love the idea that Hua Wei and the other Chinese mobile phone companies are continually innovating and pushing the boundaries unlike Apple or Samsung that just seem to rest on their laurels because they have close to no competition in the Western hemisphere.
With regards to that ridiculous price point, I can sort of understand since such technology is in its infancy stage. A lot of it has probably went into R&D. I don't think they're aiming to sell huge stock but releasing it just to showcase what they can and have created as well as to test the market.
If the market response is positive, then it would be further developed and subsequent model prices should go down. I wouldn't be an early adopter for sure but that price point seems more justifiable then to pay for whatever models Apple and Samsung are charging.

A lot of people thought that large screen foldable phones were a gimmick but most of us love them now and Tecno and Oppo are going to release tri folding screen devices.

If there is an option to have a bigger screen, why not? Moving forward, West app will want to be available in Huawei HarmonyOS so as to have a piece of China market. Of course there is growing pain for any new technology. Eventually it will be cheap and reliable etc. Embrace new technology.

one thing you forgot to mention is why this device exist. huawei is transitioning to harmony os NEXT which is their standalone OS. .apk files wont work natively and this new OS will power phones tablets laptops TVs and cars. this product exists to better adapt apps to larger screen form factors.

But you mix two things: the concept of a trifoldable and the disadvantages of a Huwaei device (no official google apps). I would rather concentrate the debate on the concept of a trifold device.

As some guys already said, this can be advantages of a trifoldable device:

- a 10 inch device in the pocket => that is a real tablet in the pocket (instead of mini tablet of 7, 6 inches). This means that whenever you travel, you don't have to take your tablet with you, because it is in your pocket. This can be applied for long distance travels (plane) and for short distance travels (train to work).

- the aspect ratio for watching movies can be better on a trifoldable than on a foldable.

For me, I see a trifoldable as a replacement for my smartphone and my tablet. So I would not by any tablet any more. Today I have a foldable (Honor Magic V2), but I still need a tablet because the inside screen of the foldable is still too small to cover all my usage. I need a bigger screen for watching movies and for reading the newspaper. A 10 inch screen is big enough for me.

I agree wirh you about the durability concerns. That is why I will never be an early adopter. I would wait for second of third generation devices, hoping that the price would also decrease. The maximum I can pay for a trifoldable is 2000 euro.

I have a Huawei Mate XS2 going on 2 years "folding outward" flexible screen always exposed ... no issues. I also use all my Google and Microsoft apps daily....no issues. Foldables great for multitasking but I really hate trying to watch content on a square screen. This fixes that. Huawei hardware is legit.

A triple fold is much less of a gimmick than a 2 fold because it's actually tablet sized for writing... Which is what I use my tablet for and I need it on the move

Of course I am respecting your honest opinion 😊. But for me the tri fold is no gimmick. I am doing picture editing on smartphones when I'm on a train. And a bigger screen is always better. Even if it would be just for watching Netflix... The aspect ratio on the tri fold will be much better than on the square-ish regular foldables.
The big issue could be the software. As far as I know Huawei is pushing the new harmony os, and that isn't compatible with Android apps.
Maybe it will be better to wait for xiaomi... They seem to make a tri fold early next year.
But I'm looking forward to hear you impressions of Huaweis tri fold..
And who knows.. Maybe you love it, when you've got it in your hands 😊

I have seen huawei mate x 2019 first huawei fold drop test on YouTube and it's soo amazing it handle many drop/ HUAWEIs Technology is soo advanced and now hyawei have it's own kunlun glass since 2022 soo i think no issue / HUAWEI is best #1

I have a Huawei mate 50 pro and before that it was p40 pro. I live in the UK and do all my work on my mobile. Getting Google is actually really easy now. Absolutely no problems now. Was difficult to some extent in 2020 for about 1 year but OK now. I have auto Android and contact less pay and virtually every app you want.

TCL (I think) tried this four yeas ago, there were a number of videos about the tri fold phone back then it didn't go anywhere. There are recent photos of the Huawei CEO using their own version of the trifold on a plane

For someone who is a tech person, saying google doesn't work on huawei wow, so many ways around the ban, as a owner off a p40 pro no problem running google, and this new device being high it will have good build quality

Thank you for being honest about these rare V3 issues.

Myself and many others had a similar hinge issue with my Samsung fold 4 which caused a line through the screen, and they made me pay $500 for the fix and didn't cover it.

The one reason I can see is the aspect ratio, most phone are 16:9-20:9, foldables open are 1:1-1.2:1, a tri fold could approach the former when open. Avoiding black bars and awkward scaling. But a £4000, <12" tablet that is super fragile but it fits in your pocket? Hard sell even if it was available in the UK with all the features.

This would be much closer to the aspect ratio I'd prefer for videos and games. Bye bye huge black bars or a lot of cropping and that alone is worth it.
