The Inquisition represented a significant legal advancement. In a time when torture was widespread, and trials were conducted under the arbitrary judgment of those in power, whether civil or ecclesiastical, the Inquisition established a closed procedure that granted the accused a hearing, provided them with a defense if they couldn't afford one, and restricted torture methods to those that wouldn't leave permanent consequences.
It's incredible to hear such nonsense about it, especially considering that, at this point, the data (the Inquisition documented everything) is available for anyone who cares to examine it, as numerous scholars have confirmed. Just as an example: The Spanish Inquisition executed a total of 5 (five) people accused of witchcraft in 300 years. In England, more than 300 women were executed for witchcraft just during the 17th century.
