Dr. Mary Barbera discusses homeschooling autism with Marie.

We always love hearing from members of our online course and community who have found success in our programs. Marie L. is the mother of two children diagnosed with autism. I am so thankful for her willingness to share her story and even videos with our community, which really impact a lot of lives.

Marie’s son was only mid-way through Kindergarten when the COVID-19 shutdown occurred. Like many moms, she sought out resources to support and help her child. Marie was familiar with The Verbal Behavior Approach prior to this at her doctor's advice to help her son potty train in preparation for Kindergarten. As a parent, you are your child’s lifelong teacher and advocate. School and therapists will come and go, and Marie’s story really proves just how important it is to be the Gung Ho Parent. Not only has Marie’s hard work helped her son but it has greatly helped her older daughter who was diagnosed with autism at age 9, as she was able to develop specific programming for her needs based on my approach.

Whats strange here is "proper education" i thought every child is unique and obviously results matter. Such as these children progressed at home. I think homeschool is just right for certain if not most children but even more so for special needs children. But that could mean incorporation of some professional assistance and guidance etc. I think the idea of mass school is actually more odd than homeschooling or small community schooling. Every child deserves individualized learning and you only truly get that with being the main subject and focus, not grouped with others. And the people who care the most and genuinely as parents and family should be most invested and most understanding of the child. Especially married couples where it could be easier done financially with one full time working parent and other focused on children, they could even get education on teaching their own children as well as others. But even single parents can be successful and actually ideal when done properly with including assistances.

If parents are going to homeschooling their children with autism - why are we working on social skills? Who are the children going to practice social skills with???

The district doesnt help and keeps shuffeling the rise program from school to school and doesnt always hire qualified teachers and dont incentivize the good teachers to keep them
