The invisible sun refers to the metaphorical heat bearing down on all the population living in fear and hate or one another as well as the government civil and military personnel trying keep a lid on the boiling troubles and preventing an all out civil war.

Love this song. SO memorable: The Police in concert in Baton Rouge at LSU Arena on November 10, 1983, on the Synchronicity tour. I had photographer's seats as my boyfriend worked for a major rock concert promoter. The Police were brilliant.

I had a mondegreen/ misinterpretation of these lyrics for years. I was a huge Transformers/ Gobot fan. I would heard instead of there must be an invisible sun with there must be an invisible son . Instead of hearing it gives its heats to everyone with of our Leader- one.
