A constitutional petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and others regarding the delay in elections in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assemblies, which were dissolved in January of this year, is being heard by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The five-member bench is headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and includes Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan, and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail. The PTI challenged the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision to postpone the Punjab polls until October 8 due to security and financial constraints. Later, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali requested that the general elections in the province be held along with Punjab polls due to the security situation in the province. The hearing coincides with the federal government tabling the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 in the National Assembly on Tuesday, which seeks to amend the powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice.
