No matter our age, being the new kid on the block is always easier when neighbors reach out and offer a sincere welcome. Pop by with a small welcome gift, something small that you might like if you just moved into a new place and exchange contact information.

Be a good new neighbor and offer to help out where help may be needed. Perhaps you could offer to pick up dinner, meet a service person, or offer recommendations while they are busy setting up their new household.

How do you tell neighbours that you DON"T want them popping in and asking questions and that EVERY visit and question is intrusive? They just don't get it!

Hi Heidi, I had a new neighbor move in next door. I followed your advice and introduced myself. I dont really have much money so I decided that I would paint a family portrait of them. In an effort to get a good look at the family I spent a lot of time outdoors watching them. They have young children and noticed me starring at them for quite some time. The father seemed to be irritated and moved the kids inside the home. I was immediately put off and thought that I should call it off, but decided that I should stick with my gut and finish the portrait. For the picture of the family I had no brown paint, so I decided to use black. Because the family is black. I painted the portrait but it took a long time, so I ended up knocking on their door at about 1130 pm. Again, the father answered, this time VERY irritated that I woke them up. I stuck my hand out and introduced myself and handed him the painting of his family. He shook his head, through the painting on the front deck and slammed the door. At this point I'm wondering what you would recommend... This couple seems to really like their kids so maybe I should spend more effort trying to meet their kids, potentially when they're walking to school and then become friends with the family that way? Or maybe I should just start buying the kids toys? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Heidi!
