The impeccable third album from Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan "I'm a Writer, Not a Fighter" was released in September 1973. The album contains hits such as "Get Down", "Why Oh Why Oh Why", "A Friend Of Mine" and "Ooh Baby".

Lyrics:

Told you once before
And I won't tell you no more
Get down, get down, get down
You're a bad dog, baby
But I still want you around

You give me the creeps
When you jump on your feet
So get down, get down, get down
Keep your hands to yourself
I'm strictly out of bounds

Once upon a time, I drank a little wine
Was as happy as could be, happy as could be
Now I'm just like a cat on a hot tin roof
Baby, what do you think you're doing to me

Told you once before
And I won't tell you no more
So get down, get down, get down
You're a bad dog, baby
But I still want you around, around
I still want you around
Hey hey hey

I don't give a damn
And I'd like you, if you can
To get down, get down, get down
You're a bad dog, baby
But I still want you around

Once upon a time, I drank a little wine
Was as happy as could be, happy as could be
Now I'm just like a cat on a hot tin roof
Baby, what do you think you're doing to me

Told you once before
And I won't tell you no more
So get down, get down, get down
You're a bad dog, baby
But I still want you around, around
I still want you around, mmm

It’s 50 years since Gilbert O’Sullivan found himself at the top of the Billboard chart with Alone Again Naturally. Neil Diamond said he wished he had written it and swiftly featured it in his live set, as have several more singers over the years, from Nina Simone to Pet Shop Boys and Elton John. Paul Weller, Squeeze and The Lemon Twigs – proudly count themselves as Gilbert fans. Other notable admirers include Tim Burgess and the late John Peel, who wrote, “if we've got to live by the charts alone, then let's have Gilbert O'Sullivan in them".

Gilbert explains his part on Love Casualty as “something akin to “a Keith Richards riff”– although other ears might hear something closer to JJ Cale in the interplay between O’Sullivan and Pat Murdoch’s supple guitar ornamentations. As with so many Gilbert O’Sullivan songs, stretching back to his very first hit Nothing Rhymed, it’s a gentle call to humanity that favours plaintive persuasion over preachiness – and on Driven, it’s by no means alone in doing that.

This is definitely my favorite Gilbert O'Sullivan song of all-time. There is clearly no doubt about it.

A great, upbeat tune! It was played often in the 70’s when I was a little kid. I never hear it anymore on classic stations. So I’ll just have to keep playing it myself!

I'll throw my chips in for this being his best tune.
A complete 180 from his astronomically huge but morose "Alone Again (Naturally)".

Had the 45rpm record and listened to it over and over and over again on my Show-n-Tell record player. Liked the tune, had no concept of meaning. It suddenly popped into my head today about 50 years later out of nowhere. (March 2025) For what reason? Cannot say. “Get Down” originated as a simple piano warm-up exercise for O’Sullivan. Recognizing its potential, he expanded the tune into a full-fledged song, aiming to offer his audience a refreshing departure from his usual somber themes. The result was a vibrant track that combined playful lyrics with an energetic melody, inviting listeners to experience a different facet of his musical repertoire. The lyrics of “Get Down” present an intriguing blend of literal and metaphorical interpretations. On the surface, the repeated command to “get down” seems directed at a misbehaving dog. However, O’Sullivan later clarified that the song addresses a woman whose overzealous attention feels overwhelming, likening her behavior to that of an overly affectionate pet.

I was a child when I last heard this song, now I’m in my mid fifties and have rediscovered it, and now cannot stop listening to it and singing it! What a gem!! Thank you Mr. O’Sullivan! Your music is truly gold!

I'm 58. I remember this 8 track being in an upstairs closet with other 8 tracks.

I really like this song.
I first heard this song while on a plane- in Sept. 2008- while flying from the U.S. and Europe and back.

Was nine when this came out. Remember exactly where I was at when first hearing it. I was sitting in my dad's 72 Oldsmobile while mom was in the grocery store.
