Special Edition Knowledge Base Video from the Wellborn Musclecar Museum!
In 1971, emissions controls were on their way in and high-horsepower muscle cars were on their way out. Emissions controls coupled with climbing gas prices and insurance rates led to a lack of desire for cars like this Hemi-powered, 4-speed, ‘Cuda. Because of this, just 62 Hemi ‘Cudas left the factory in 1971 equipped with the 4-speed manual transmission and just 59 of those were sold in the United States. Only one car had white Hemi “billboard” stripes down the sides, and this is that car.
As with any mid-sized Mopar product during this time period, the ‘Cuda was available with engine choices from the Slant 6 up to the 440 big block V8, which included the desirable 426 Hemi. The transmission choices were 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual, and 3-speed automatic. Not only were decal sets available, but the ‘Cudas were offered in the classic “High Impact” colors including Lime Light, Bahama Yellow, Tor Red, Lemon Twist, Curious Yellow, Vitamin C, In-Violet, Sassy Grass and Moulin Rouge.
When the Wellborns purchased this car in 2015, it had been repainted with no vinyl top and no billboard stripes by a previous owner. The Wellborn family, prominent Mopar enthusiasts and collectors, like to know what they have and looked over the build sheet. It didn’t take long for brothers Tim and Curtis Wellborn to discover that this ‘Cuda was the only one in the world built this way!
