aka "Oyfn veg shteyt a boym" (By the Wayside Stands a Tree)
Lyrics: Itzik Manger (1901-1969); Melody: Unknown
Choral arrangement: Binyumen Schaechter (2019)

This choral arrangement was funded by a grant from the Marinus and Minna B. Koster Foundation and is dedicated to Nan Bases, long-time alto, treasurer, and supporter of the Chorus. It is based on Schaechter’s 1991 piano-vocal score, composed to accompany soloists who have performed the song.

This video was posted on YouTube on the 120th anniversary of Itzik Manger's birth, May 30, 1901.

This is one of my favorite songs, and Schaechter's arrangement is evocative and touching. Congratulations to all involved!

Binyamin Schaecter's new interpretations and arrangements to classic Yiddish shtetl music are a welcome addition to the Yiddish repertoire. They would appeal to both Yiddish lovers and music lovers

I’m here because of _Yiddishkeit: Yiddish Vernacular in the New Land_ by Harvey Pekar, his final book.

And yet. Eitz Chaim!
Let's hope these words are not prophetic of Jewish lives in future years.
