"Píseň práce" (Song of Labour) is the Czechoslovak version of the Austrian workers' song, "Lied der Arbeit." Originally written as an Austrian trade union song in 1867, it quickly gained popularity among European labor movements, being treated with almost the same significance as the Internationale in the German-speaking sphere. In 1902, the first Czech translation of the song by Svatopluk Čech was published in a collection of social democratic and other left-wing "social" poetry. This translation helped spread the song among the Slavic territories occupied by Austria-Hungary, resulting in the song being translated into many other languages, such as Polish and Serbo-Croatian. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 and the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic, a new translation by František Hlaváček became popular as an official hymn of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party, and other left-wing parties that saw themselves as the successors of the Austrian Social Democratic Party, for whom the song was originally intended. After the Communist Party seized power in 1948, the song was treated with the same importance as the Internationale.
