They are well known for their incredible acrobatic aerial displays during courtship which involves high speed ‘follow the leader’ back flips, dips and 360 barrel rolls. This behavior is sometimes accompanied by loud crowing calls that can be heard from a long distance away.
They can cover daily distances of about 300 miles in search for their food which includes small antelope, rodents, birds, snakes and carrion.
Juvenile Bateleurs take 8 years to develop their black feathers and are often mistaken for Brown Snake Eagles as the coloration is very similar.
Mature Bateleur Eagles have extremely short tails. The female can be distinguished from the male by her white ‘petticoat’ sticking out on her wing. Her shoulders are brown where his are grey in color.
Bateleurs also enjoy sunning themselves by standing with their wings outstretched to soak up the warm rays.
