Surfshark used to be good, but has unfortunately been severely downgraded for the past couple of months. Their client doesn’t even have a proper kill switch.

I am curious. Would paying for a VPS and using something like open VPN access server or open VPN cloud using a VPS as a "connector" be more or less safe than a VPN service such as SurfShark.
