Namibia has sworn in its first female president on the country’s 35th independence anniversary. Speaking to Africa Daily's Mpho Lakaje, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said she’s ready to tackle long-standing issues, including land reform and rising unemployment. But first, she reflected on what it means to be the first woman to lead her country.

We are so excited to have you miss president. Thank you to the interviewer for asking the question about land, which is a rising concern. We would also like for the president to deal with lack of proper living in katutura like the location with no electricity or toilets, people are forced to go to the bushes, which is terrible and inhuman to allow others to live an uncomfortable life while, those we voted to be in power, sit and relax while we suffer. We also hope we as a nation can work on becoming independent and stop importing everything, which is a very big part of why unemployment is not being tackled. Once we as a nation become self reliant, more jobs will be created, let us industrialize this country of ours. God bless you miss president, we trust you and believe you will give us your best.

Talk is cheap, even the late president talked about creating employment, but rather unemployment rose, millions of money got lost from time to time, no increasement on civil servants, till heading to election, then they started bribing people, with a little they could offer..let's hope you'll stand for your words.

Wow! This new President is certainly making waves. Good for her and good for the country. I am Namibian and we have just laid our Sammy to rest, as well as the previous President, and quite unexpectedly this woman enters the fray. I had never heard of her before I saw the U-Tube reports yesterday.
