Are 17 and 18 Androids or Cyborgs?

When it comes to number 17 and 18. There is always confusion on how to call them, some people call them androids and some people call them cyborgs. So what are they? Are they androids, are they cyborgs… what’s the difference? Well, that’s what we are gonna talk about today.

17 and 18 are Cyborgs.

I grew up with the German Dub, where they are called Cyborgs. On top of that...it just sounds cooler 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's easier to just call all of the doctor's creations androids. It would be a mess if some of the numbered androids were cyborgs. Then 17 and 18 would be cyborg 2 and 3.

Androids completely are robotic build but the twins are entirely organic only modifided a bit to be super human with infinite stamina also their ki cannot be sensed however the sound like rhythm helped them hearing other their movements or others activity. Plus they have emotions an can have kids.

Generally a retell of the Android saga with 17/18's childhood background story would be a great idea as a arc it hadn't much a deep focus before.

Everything after Cell doesn't actually happen. So 18 never has a child. She's 100% machine. A copy of the real human she was modelled after with only an artificial intelligence version of the real human she came from. I'm pretty sure Doctor Gero would make her fully functional (if you know what I mean) but not to the point where she'd be able to have a baby. I'm sorry, but they are Androids.

In French, all of Dr. Gero's creations are called cyborgs. 16 号, 17 号, 18 号, 19 号, etc. are called C-16, C-17, C-18, and C-19 in my language.

人造人間 ( _jinzôningen_ ) is indeed an umbrella term in Japanese, and it refers to all types of humanoid beings, mechanical or organic, that were created or modified by man through artificial means.

This includes:

*androids* (robots that look like human beings): 13, 14, 15, and 19.

*cyborgs* (human beings with cybernetic implants, or mechanical bodies with human organs implants): #8 "Hach'chan" and Gero himself.

*genetically-modified humans* / *biologically-enhanced humans* : 17 and 18, who have been entirely restructured at the cellular level and enhanced using almost exclusively bio-organic components (i.e: genetically-modified human cells) and only a minimal amount of machinery (the explosives removed by Shen Long, the shutdown mechanism made of very few tiny cybenertic implants, and a small perpetual energy reactor). Although there are very few mechanical parts in their bodies, that's still enough to label them as *cyborgs* .

*bioroids* or *clones* : a mechanical or organic, synthetic humanoid lifeform created through genetic engineering, like Cell (and 21 in Dragon Ball FighterZ).

When the Japanese at Tôei, BanDai, Shûeisha, etc. translated the names into English in the early/mid-90s, they didn't bother with all those nuances and just opted for the generic term "android". Which is not wrong _per se_ (most of Gero's creations are indeed androids), although it _is_ a misnomer as far as 8, 17, 18, Gero, and Cell are concerned.

Im Portugal, A17 and A18 are actually C17 and C18 so the translation was cyborg!
But there's is also another thing to consider, because the first Dragon Ball, Goku's childhood, was translated from japanese to french and then to portuguese, and there was also cyborgs in Dragon Ball! Dragon Ball Z I believe that was translated from japanese to spanish and then to portuguese, and we also used the term cyborg in Dragon Ball Z!

I know I'm very late to the party. By definition No. 17, 18 and Dr. Gero are Cyborgs, only No. 16 and 19 are Androids.

These guys aren’t cyborgs, 17 and 18 are artificial humans. Dr Gero needed to restructure biological material to be suitable and be able to work with the machine parts of their bodies. Although they can function as humans and sweat, grow hair, bleed even. That doesn’t make them cyborg when the blood you’re producing or the hair growing from your body isn’t exactly what you were born with. We can use the example of Dr Gero as android 20 being a cyborg because a human part is there instead of it being a synthetic brain with an uploaded consciousness or another example outside of Dragon Ball. Raiden from Metal Gear is a cyborg even though like Robocop he’s barely human, part of his head is still human. If every single piece of you was replaced yet the skin you see yourself in acts as skin or you can still produce saliva, blood and have human functions but don’t need to eat or sleep you’re no longer human even if biological material was used to remake your entire body.
