Peritoneal surface cancer originates in the peritoneum, the thin layer of tissue that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the organs within it or spreads to it from nearby organs. The peritoneum plays a crucial role in supporting and protecting the abdominal organs. Therefore, when peritoneal surface cancer affects the peritoneum, it can cause serious health complications. This type of cancer can also result from the metastasis of cancer from nearby organs.
Types of Peritoneal Surface Cancer:
-Primary Peritoneal Cancer: Cancer that originates in the peritoneum is called primary peritoneal cancer. It is rare and often similar to epithelial ovarian cancer.
-Secondary Peritoneal Cancer: This occurs when cancer from nearby organs, such as the ovaries, colon, stomach, or pancreas, spreads to the peritoneum. The peritoneum becomes a secondary site of cancer involvement.
