i liked your expression: "it has no choice but to look real" - it's the years of experience for us artists to pin down the sum of imperfections that create perfection in the end :)

Hey sickphyschotic, Instructor Jamie S. Grove says, "The head is cast in 1068 tin silicone by Silpak (wwwDOTsilpakDOTcom). In all honesty, tin silicone is easier but it does leech oil after a period of time which will make the paint come off and be a big slimy mess. The best silicone to use for a mask or a prop you want to get some mileage with and less problems in the future would be platinum silicone. Though more difficult and more expensive, the quality is much better."

Thanks a lot. You guys are always really helpful! I think I'm gonna give that silicone a try. I'm just using it to make a little prop head for myself.

No, certainly not lifecast. Sculpted by Gary Tunnicliffe's Two Hours in the Dark. The giveaway is the mouth. You can't do a life-cast of an open mouth. - David

No, silicone bonds to silicone. It doesn't create a "layer" anymore than acrylic paint on latex creates a "layer." - David

Hey, I am watching this tutorial through your site, and it has been incredibly helpful. What type of silicone is the head cast in? If I remember correctly, Jamie says it is a tin cure silicone but not which type. Would the type of silicone used in this head work for masks as well? Thanks a lot.
