Imagine seeing a container labeled "POISON - DO NOT EAT" and then not just stealing it, but eating it, and having the audacity to sue because "I got poisoned after stealing the container clearly labelled with 'POISON - DO NOT EAT', but it's their fault for putting poison in a container and putting it in the fridge I steal food from."

The story similar to this that I always enjoyed was the one where an employee got tired of his coworker stealing his food from the shared fridge. He clearly labeled his food, made an announcement about not stealing his food, complained to his boss, complained to hr, but nothing worked. His food kept going missing. So one day he decided to cook up some fajitas with all the fixings. Just made it look absolutely delicious. Unbeknownst to anyone, the guy mixed in some ghost peppers with the fajitas and the screams of pain coming from the theif were hilarious. His food was never stolen again.

To be honest it would be so funny to have someone try to sue you for giving them laxatives and they absolutely had it coming, because they stole your food

there is, in fact, a legal phenomenon that i think it's called jury nullification? where the jury can go "yeah no that's a crime but the perp shouldn't be charged for it for moral reasons rather than legal ones"

Theres a similar story floating around of a guy whose food kept being stolen despite his annoucements, confrontations (he knew the perp), warning labels etc. He complained about this to his doctor, who slyly went "Well, can't help you there. But I can prescribe you some prescription level laxatives for your uh, GI issue. Remember to take with a meal."

And then when the perp, hospitalized, tried to sue, he was countersued and lost because he had technically stolen someones prescription medicine, a very big crime.

I found one where he talked to his doctor who helped him get a percription for the laxatives and the person who ate the lunch was now eating medicine prescribed to the person by a doctor and thus in much more trouble.

If you ever go to jury duty, remember this concept. A jury can override the letter of the law for the sake of morality. Just don't mention you know that, or they'll throw you out.

Best version of this I’ve seen was to get a prescription for diuretics and put them in the food as per DR orders. Then when they steal, it’s a felony because they stole *prescription meds*! 😊

"Not guilty by reason of 'screw that guy'" is actually kind of a real thing! It's called Jury Nulification and it basically means that yeah, you know the evidence should point to one verdict, but for any number of reasons (Yes, including "screw that guy") you vote against that. This goes for both believing guilt but voting for innocence and believing innocence but voting for guilt.

You would be hard-pressed to find _any_ group of twelve strangers who would unanimously vote against the classic lunch laxatives trick. It is always, always deserved.

The thief could argue that no reasonable person would think it was poison because A) who puts poison in the work fridge? B) it looks and appears to be a normal lunch and c) prior times the food was not posioned, so they had no reason to believe that this time it would be.

Not siding with the thief but if you want to do this go to the doctor, ask them to prescribe you a powerful laxative with specific orders to add to your lunch/meals, get it in writing, that way you have an airtight defense
