Today we are going to show you how to pass a bend test with the plate bender we built. If you're a welding student or professional welder chances are you've had to do a guided bend test before. The likelihood that you've failed a bend test is also pretty good. Lots of good welders bust a bend test. because they don't know how to properly prepare the coupons for the test. Did you know that preparing your plates properly can increase your chances of passing a bend test. On the other hand, if you prepare your plates for the bend test improperly, you are setting yourself up for failure! This video is a students guide on how to pass a bend test! So if you are doing your first bend test, good luck!

As hack hobbyist I have been watching this channel to learn some basics and for its entertainment value (almost every video is good for a laugh or two). But have to say, you guys have also given me a new found respect for the profession of welding, a combination of technical expertise and craftsmanship. Well done and kudos to all the true welding professionals out there!

I'm a third year local 40 ironworker (nyc) third year apprentice learning welding and this channel has been the best for me to learn welding. Thank you for doing what you do!

Yeah, don’t quench! 😂 I made that mistake once. I picked up my strip after leaving it to cool but it was still super hot. Out of reaction I chucked it in the nearest tub of water. I went to bend my two pieces, neither of which had visible porosity, but the one that was accidentally quenched split right in half! Good thing it was just for practice. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yep. All of that instruction was totally consistent with my training. The bend prep details are vital!

I always find myself watching these and thinking "That's honestly no more difficult than welds I've done out in the field." Yet I still get over the "test jitters" that come before a test. I've been welding for 4 years and still can't seem to walk my happy butt into the test.

The weld shop has been closed most of this year so studying this channel during quarantine literally prepped me for my test, I am testing next week💪🏼 433

As a welded structures design engineer who defines the usage of AWS D14.4 and D1.1 on the drawings, these types of videos give me a massive appreciation for the guys actually putting the structures together. The skill/workmanship that is required and verified with tests like this excite me to want to define welds that will result in high quality welds leading to long lasting structures. Kind of makes me want to try the qualification test myself as a non-welder and see how bad thing turn out. haha🤣

I have a piece I just finished urging yesterday on a 1G. Can’t wait to bend it tomorrow at the welding shop. It’s my second bend test.

Fantastic, I was just googling how to prep a plate with backing for a bend today. Now I don’t have a press or anything I was planning on just strapping it into a vice and using a pipe to bend it. Maybe too crude, but again this is just what I have access to. Thanks, happy Memorial Day

A great way to remove a backer is this, Cut your strips, Use a zip disk to notch into the MIDDLE of the backer and go down 3/4 of the backer. you now have a line scored in the backer but not into the test piece. Then put your backer in a Vise and twist. the backer will split and be easily removed by hand. then minimal grinding is needed,

Thanks, I've been doing a lot of these, lol. One thing i was doing wrong was trying to essentially gouge out my back strip.
