Broadcast Blasphemy on Dodgers CF Cody Bellinger's Wild Throw Out of Play - A 'Time of Throw' Award

Official Baseball Rule 5.06(b)(4)(G) states that a runner advances two bases from their position *at the time the wild throw is made."* In turn, because R1 Kris Bryant was located between second and third base (having passed second base) at the time of the wild throw, his two-base award takes him to third base and to home plate, scoring a run.

The umpires initially ruled that Rockies batter-runner Brendan Rodgers had not yet arrived at first base when center fielder Cody Bellinger released his throw, resulting in a Rockies challenge for runner placement, a call that was confirmed as the Replay Official conclusively determined that batter-runner Rodgers was indeed somewhere between home plate and first base at the time of the throw, confirming the on-field umpires' ruling and making Rodgers' two-base award first base and second base.

*Please note there are limited exceptions to this rule, but none of them award bases based upon the runner's position at the time the ball left the playing field. The main exception pertains to a ball thrown out of play by an infielder on the fielder's first play (usually on a ground ball). In such a case, the runners are awarded two bases based on their positions at the time of the pitch.

Surprised by this. When I met Joe in AA, he used to always have a rule book on hand and was always very knowledgeable

Yes the broadcasters got it wrong but I love Joe and Orel, they don't get on umpires nearly as much as others

In a game last summer a batter hit a grounder to the first base coach's box. The coach picked it up and threw it back to the catcher. I had signaled for a foul ball. On the swing the third-base coach had a runner stealing. I noticed that the runner did not immediately returned to second base so I turned to the third-base coach and again signaled that it was a foul ball. I just thought the coach didn't see that it had gone foul or that I had signaled it. The Coach seemed puzzled why I was sending his runner back to second base. I simply explained that it was a foul ball dead ball and the runner needs to return. The coach actually debated with me that I was wrong. This was an accelerated team we're talking about and a coach that is very experienced. I was confused to say the least. I thought I was in some alternate universe or something. I had to explain the rule three different times. That was a weird day.

I prefer plain cheesecake as it doesn't need anything else, and I am not fond of cherries or strawberries.

I agree with the umpire’s call - and yours. However I wouldn't exactly characterize that base hit to centerfield in front of Bellinger as: ”a rocket.”
Let's go DODGERS 2023 !!! ⚾️⚾️⚾️

Does timing change if it's not considered a wild throw but rather an error by the fielder?

1:57 time mark, I don't understand the comment about "tie going to the runner" being a myth. While it's true that there is no such rule that explicitly states that a tie goes to the runner, it is nonetheless true that ties are ruled in favor of the runner.

MLB Rule 5.09(a)(10) states that a batter is out when "After a third strike or after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base." This puts the burden on the defensive team to touch the player or to touch the first base BEFORE the runner touches the base. If there is a tie, the defensive team has failed to touch the first base before the runner. In effect, a tie goes to the runner.

EDIT: I also think that cherry cheesecake tasting better than plain cheesecake isn't a myth either. 😁

Why do you people have to be so serious all the time? Can't you just have a little fun now and then?
Hope all the CCS folks and their loved ones have a happy holiday period. May you all get the cake you crave, even if its cheesecake. Why you wouldn't go for the simple pleasure of a caramel mud cake is beyond me, but I've often been the odd one.
